DAVE REGAN - CONTINUED FROM PAGE 29
Then I hurt my back while shoeing and then dislocated my knee in a car accident." Before the latter incident, Regan was the paddock blacksmith at Woodbine, which meant he had to fix shoes that were twisted or lost while horses were being saddled in the paddock. "That's a lot harder than putting a shoe on a horse while he's relaxed in his own stall," he emphasized. "I've had a lot of nicks and knocks in the paddock, because the horses
are so keyed up before a race."
Regan also spent some time training
horses owned by his father. Later he became a placing judge at Fort Erie and then becoming a clocker, which he admitted "is easier on the body than shoeing, but I still enjoy it, if the horse will stand still."
Regan is also the paddock blacksmith at Fort Erie and one of his responsibilities is making sure horses are shod properly for turf racing, which means a plain-fronted shoe with no toe grabs. "I used to check before a race, which sometimes led to horses being scratched because of improper shoes," he said, "so now I do it in the mornings, after I finish clocking, and we avoid most of those situations."
With leg and back problems from old injuries, and now arthritis in his hands, Regan does only limited shoeing outside of paddock emergencies, which numbered 23 during the 2004 Fort Erie season. "And the first horse I had to work on in the paddock this year got me good," he said. "It was a keyed-up maiden. It's better to remember the good horses like Sunny's Halo and Deputy Minister. The classy horses just stand there while you're working on them."
