WHERE DO JOCKS GO CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10 ....obviously getting into the spirit.
“Isn’t it true that fuel is one of the major expenses of a large airline?” I ask.
“Yes, that is certainly true,” she answers.
“Well wouldn’t a plane full of jockeys flying 3000 kilometres use a lot less fuel than a plane full of sumo wrestlers going the same distance?”
There is a small pause at the other end of the line while she ponders my inescapable logic.
“I don’t know that a plane would ever carry a full load of sumo wrestlers,” answers Ms Cook, “But any attempt to charge our customers by the pound or kilogram would not only be discriminatory, it would be very difficult to manage. Can you imagine having to get weighed before you purchased your ticket?”
I don’t quit that easily. I point out that jockeys don’t need as much leg room, that they never impose excess body parts on the person sitting next to them, that they eat less and, because their clothes are smaller, their bags weigh less: this, of course means a more efficient, fuel-saving, all-round safer flying experience. Ms Cook will not be dissuaded.
“Sadly,” she says, “As much as I’m sympathetic to your cause, I am unable to whip their fares any lower.”
Well, I tried. Happy New Year!
