Throughout his 22 year training career Malcolm never dropped below 20 wins a year (a career average of 28 wins a year) until recently when he recorded 18 wins in 2017, 14 wins in 2018 and only 4 wins in what will now be his nal season.
“Sally and I took the winter off last year and found that we weren’t bored,” stated Malcolm, “we started talking about retiring six months ago and made the nal decision two months ago.”
When asked to name some of the highlights of his racetrack career the 62 year old mentions his time as an assistant and his rst Breeders’ Cup when Dance Smartly won the 1991 Distaff in her Triple Crown year; Chief Bearhart winning the Breeders’ Cup Turf in his nal year as an assistant and training the Sam-Son Farm homebred Up With the Birds to a win in the $500,000 G1 Jamaica Handicap at Belmont Park in 2013.
“I have always been lucky enough to train for
the best owners,” noted Malcolm mentioning the
13 stakes wins in 2009 as also one of his most memorable years, “we’re getting older and the game is getting tougher,” mentioning also that the day rate doesn’t cover the rising costs of feed, bedding and quality help anymore.
With only seven horses left in his barn at the beginning of November the year will run down quickly for Malcolm and Sally who are busy dispersing their equipment and tack. “By not having the best car or the best house we’ve banked enough to do this.” Malcolm mused,”I will want to do something to keep active. A part-time job which will give me something to get up for. We will miss the horses a little bit. We are fortunate enough to be in a position to retire with no regrets. We’ve enjoyed this game for a lot of years.”
