Another person who shares an enthusiasm for the Thoroughbred breed is Debby Hockin. Debby has been barrel racing for more than ve decades and today at age 62 she continues to compete with her off-track thoroughbred, Matilda Girl.
Three years ago Debby initiated The Jockey Club’s Thoroughbred Incentive Program (TIP) division for barrel racing Thoroughbreds in Ontario. With the incentives offered through the TIP Debby is hoping that more rodeo riders will consider the Thoroughbred breed for barrel racing.
TIP offers sponsorship for Thoroughbred-only classes and divisions, high point Thoroughbred awards at open horse shows and competitions, a Thoroughbred of the Year award and a Young Rider of the Year Award.
2019 was Mack & Clyde’s rst year competing in the TIP barrel racing shows in Ontario and they came away with the Open Canadian Champion and overall Youth Champion at the shows.
“By competing in the TIP sponsored shows it allows people to see how versatile the thoroughbreds are.” Noted Debby who would like to see more barrel racers competing with thoroughbreds, “If we can
get more people competing in the barrel racing TIP shows then barrel racing may be offered in the TIP Championships too.”
