Trainer Henry Reid Has a Goal
New trainer Henry Reid says his goal is to win 15 races this year.
“I may be counting my chickens before the eggs.” laughs Henry as he goes about grazing one of his trainees outside his barn at Fort Erie racetrack. He laughs because Henry knows that winning isn’t always easy, especially when you are just starting out. “if I win more, it will be a bonus.” says the optimistic fledgling trainer.
Henry Reid has a wealth of horseracing experience to back up his optimism in his first year of training.
Originally from Jamaica, Henry started his life working with machines. His hands were wrapped around the mechanical components of automobiles.
He didn’t start working with horses until he moved to Canada and began working as a hotwalker at Woodbine in 1984.
“I had a friend who got me started at the track.” explained Henry who was originally working as a mechanic upon his arrival in Canada , “I liked to bet on them (horses), so my friend helped me get a job.”
Henry began his new career with horses working
for trainer Sid Attard, who promoted the hotwalker to groom after his first year. Henry excelled as a groom and rubbed numerous winners, achieving leading groom status for the barn in his third year of grooming.
Always willing to learn, Henry has worked for a few trainers to gather experience and has travelled with the horses to many different racetracks across NorthAmerica. HenryeventuallyearnedhisAssistant Trainer license working for Arthur Silvera, a position he held on and off for a number of years.
Even though Henry achieved his own license to train in 2006, he has been the assistant to trainer Darwin Banach for the past two seasons, finally taking the leap to train horses himself in 2007.
Henry will have 10 horses in training for 2007 and plans to have runners both at Fort Erie and Woodbine. He is hard working and dedicated to his horses.
Fifteen races is his goal. Lets hope he has fifteen chickens to count in December.

FOX ON THE RUN
2002 Chestnut Gelding
Foxtrail – Lucretia Clay
7 starts, 1 win, $10,358.
This pretty chestnut stands 15.3hh
and has a kind and inquisitive personality. He has just started a limited amount of retraining and should be good to go – although The Fox didn’t demonstrate a whole lot of talent on the track, he is sound and could excel at whatever discipline his adopter chooses for him.
