Horsemen’s Benevolent Protective Association (ON) Elects New Board of Directors
Report from the Executive Director
A big congratulations is in order for the successful HBPA Director candidates in last month’s election. As most of you are aware, our election results were determined and published on September 14, 2006. The new HBPA Board will consist of: Owners; Michael Barkowski, Conrad Cohen, William Diamant, Lynne Hindmarsh, Sam Lima, and Larry Regan. Trainers; Scott Fairlie, Stanley Fishman, Nick Gonzalez, Sue Leslie, and Danny Vella.
It is significant to note that three
elected Directors (Michael Barkowski,
Stanley Fishman, and Nick Gonzalez)
are domiciled in the Fort Erie area and
their contribution to the decision making process at the Board level will give hometown representation to that community.
On behalf of our organization, I would like to thank the other six candidates who ran for a seat on our Board. Personally, I want to thank Ralph Biamonte and Gerry Belanger for their service to our organization and membership. Their passion and knowledge of our industry will be missed.
Now that our Board has been elected, the next step of course is to elect our executive. HBPA by-law 10.1 reads: “The Directors shall, as soon as possible following each annual general meeting at which a new Board of Directors assumes office, elect from among their number the following officers: a) a President, b) not more than two Vice-Presidents, and either from
their number or from outside their number c) a Secretary-Treasurer; and the Directors, may at any time appoint such other officers and such employees as they deem expedient. In the case of officers who are employees, the Board of Directors shall have the authority to fix their respective remuneration. Each officer shall serve for a term of three years or until his or her successor is elected or appointed. If there are two Vice-Presidents one shall be an Owner and the other shall be a Trainer.”
The appointment of our executive by our Directors will take place in early October, just after our Annual General Meeting which
is slated for September 28, 2006 in Toronto.
On a completely different note, thoroughbred race dates for 2007 have been agreed to by both the HBPA
and our racetrack partners.
At Woodbine, the first day of racing will be March
31, 2007 with a closing date of December 9, 2007. Total race days will remain unchanged at 167. Ship in for training will be February 1, 2007.
At Fort Erie, opening day will be May 5, 2007 with a closing date of October 30, 2007. Total race dates have been adjusted to 84 days. Ship in date is scheduled for March 19, 2007.
The above agreements are subject to ORC approval.
Elected as directors to the eleven person board for a three year term were:
Owners - Michael Barkowski, Conrad Cohen, William Diamant, Lynne Hindmarsh, Sam Lima and Larry Regan.
Trainers - Scott Fairlie, Stanley Fishman, Nick Gonzalez, Sue Leslie and Danny Vella.
The unsuccessful candidates were as follows:
Owners - Gerry Belanger, Max Berketa, Cathy MacLean, Claudia Rabstein and Bert Simon.
Trainers - Ralph Biamonte.
The HBPA of Ontario is a non profit, volunteer organization whose mandate is to promote and enhance live thoroughbred racing in the province of Ontario. This is accomplished by representing men and women who earn their livelihoods in the industry with all stakeholders, including, but not limited to, regulators and racetrack operators.
The newly elected Board of Directors will assume their responsibilities at the conclusion of the Annual General Meeting in Toronto slated for Thursday, September 28, 2006.
