The Chuck Fipke owned Tale of Ekati was declared the winner of the G1 $300,000 Hill ‘n’ Dale Cigar Mile Handicap at Aqueduct on November 29 after the Stronach Stable owned Harlem Rocker was disquali ed from rst and placed second for causing interference in the stretch. 2008 Prince of Wales winner, Harlem Rocker had nished a nose in front of Tale of Ekati.
Jockey Chantal Sutherland was the winner aboard Mr. Rod in the G3 $109,300 Generous Stakes going 1 mile on the turf on November 29 at Hollywood Park in California. The two-year-old colt, owned by Cecil Peacock and trained by Dan Hendricks was coming off of his rst career
win on November 1 also with jockey Chantal aboard.
A Mountain of Shoeboxes
The efforts of caring backstretch employees and the Racetrack Chaplaincy of Canada’s Shawn Kennedy, this “shoebox mountain” grew to 54 boxes this year in what was deemed Operation Christmas Child. What started as a simple gesture to ll a handful of shoeboxes full of items for those in need, more than tripled in size this year. The boxes will be sent to children in a third world country.
The James and Alice Sapara
owned Springside was a last to
rst winner by 9 1/2 lengths in the $200,000 G2 Demoiselle Stakes
on November 29 at Aqueduct. Unfortunately the 2-year-old lly, trained by Josie Carroll, had to be vanned off the track after the race after reportedly injuring her right front pastern. Jockey Garrett Gomez said “he heard a pop” when the lly was galloping out.
(GB) was the winner over 6-to-5 favorite Soldier’s Dancer by a nose in the $100,000 Tropical Turf Handicap (G3) at Calder Race Course on December 6. It was a thrilling nish to the wire as the Roger Att eld trainee bobbed heads with Soldier’s Dancer for the nal sixteenth in the 1 1/8 mile turf race.
