LongRun forms partnership with Saugeen First Nation
The Indianapolis native said his son, assistant trainer Norman Casse, Jr., alerted him to the upcoming plateau.
LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society announced that it has entered into what they hope will be the rst of many partnerships with a First Nation.
Members of Saugeen First Na-
tion have adopted two of LongRun’s thoroughbred retirees, Refuse to Bend and Explosive Lad, and moved them to Ron and Janet Root’s Creek Side Farm in Southampton, Ontario, where they will be used
in educational
programs for the
Saugeen children.
These programs
will be designed
not only to teach
basic horse hus-
bandry skills, but
also to improve
the children’s
con dence and
self-esteem.
The horses and teaching will be overseen by professional educator and horsewoman Amanda Steinhoff, who has generously donated her time and ideas to this initiative.

“I hadn’t even thought about it,” said Casse. “Norm had rst mentioned it to me last fall or this past winter. He said, ‘Dad. You’re going to get your 1,000th winner sometime this year.’”
