Behind the Smile
When it comes to the general public, race tracks are environments that are off their grid. Many see only the grandstand side of horse racing, the glitz and glamour that accompanies race day. As with many other facets of life, much of the action is behind the scenes in the preparation for race day. Think auto racing: while the driver and owner get the bulk of the press and praise, it’s the pit crews and the like that are instrumental to the success of a team.
Horse racing is no different- while grooms, hot walkers, exercise riders and a host of other caretakers prep a thoroughbred for race day, it’s usually the owner trainer and jockey who are lauded. Oftentimes the bigger the win (think stakes races), the occasion is rare when the groom leads the horse in. Those
that toil in the darkness are largely forgotten in many ways.
As a Chaplain, our purpose is to focus on the caretakers of these magni cent animals. They often forfeit their own wellbeing for the greater good of readying a horse for a race. Our vision for the Race Track Chaplaincy of Canada (Ontario) is to feed, clothe, visit, council and care. This comes directly from the book of Matthew where Jesus tells a parable and sums it up by saying “whatever you do to the least of these, you do to me.” For our Chaplaincy, it’s easily remembered as Matt25/365. We’ll have an in- depth look into how we achieve that in the future.

Groom Denton Ebanks wrote the word “smile” on a beam in the barn to remind everyone of the universal language of kindness.
Denton has worked for trainer Kevin Attard for more than 7 years and currently rubs 6 horses including Spadina Road, Miss Stef and Gold Shark and yes, he does it with a smile.
