Fort Erie Racetrack Amends 2005 Racing Schedule
An amendment to the 2005 live racing schedule at Fort Erie was announced on July 23 which will see the originally scheduled Friday racing dates deleted for the month of August.
Track officials and the HBPA (Ontario) both agreed to the amended dates stating that the current horse population at Fort Erie is not strong enough to support five consecutive days of racing.
Two additional days will be added to the final weekend of racing in 2005 which, if approved, will now run through to November 1. There will also be additional races added to the weekend cards when the entries warrant the additions.
At press time Fort Erie was still awaiting approval from the Ontario Racing Commission and will continue with their live racing schedule of Saturday through Tuesday with post time at 1:05pm.

The Board of Stewards of The Jockey Club of Canada is pleased to announce the election Mr. Richard Bonnycastle of Calgary, Alberta as Chairman. Mr. Bonnycastle has been Member of the organization since its inception by E.P. Taylor in 1973 and has previously served as a Steward. Mr. Bonnycastle races under the black and white diamond silks of Harlequin Ranches and routinely campaigns his horses in Canada, California, England and Australia. Mr. Bonnycastle brings to the organization a wealth of breeding and racing knowledge not only of his native Canada but across the globe.
Mr. Bonnycastle replaces outgoing Chairman, Mr. Michael C. Byrne who stepped down when his term expired after serving for 10 years. Mr. Byrne has been a member of the organization since 1987 and became Chairman in 1995. Mr. Byrne was instrumental in forming the Horse Racing Tax Alliance of Canada, a dual breed industry association that continues to seek reform of Section 31 of the Canadian Income Tax Act. Mr. Byrne was also instrumental in creating the Canadian Graded Stakes Committee, which currently monitors 37 graded races in Canada. Before creating the committee in 1998, Canada had just 6 graded events.
The Jockey Club of Canada’s newly elected Board of Stewards will be comprised of Richard Bonnycastle, Michael Byrne, William Graham, James Lawson, Sue Leslie, Ross McKague, Richard Shaw, Glenn Sikura, Harvey Tenenbaum, Michael Van Every and Gordon Wilson.
The Jockey Club of Canada is also pleased to announce the election of five new Members: Jeffrey Begg, Geordie Hendrie, Robert Krembil, Dan Mooney and Jim McAlpine.
WEG announces 72-hour draw
Woodbine Entertainment Group announced in July that a 72-hour draw for entries will be implemented, effective August 10, the first race date of the new condition book.
Currently, trainers enter horses for a race card 48 hours in advance, except for Wednesday evening racing when draws are conducted three days prior.
“Both the horsepeople and Woodbine management feel this change could improve field size,” said Chris Evans, Woodbine’s Vice-President of Thoroughbred Racing. “We already use the three-day draw for our major race dates, so we thought it prudent to extend it to the rest of the schedule.”
Did You Know...
That this year’s Queen’s Plate winner, Wild Desert, is under investigation by the racing commissions in New York and New Jersey. They are trying to determine where the 3-year-old colt had been training prior to shipping to Woodbine as he had only one published work at Monmouth Park in New Jersey after an eighth place finish in the Arkansas Derby on April 16.
Wild Desert had a slow three furlong work at Woodbine 3-days prior to his half length victory in the Plate which met the criteria in Ontario (one recorded three-furlong work if not raced within 30 days) therefore the investigations will not effect his Plate win or his third place finish in the Prince of Wales.
The two U.S. racing commissions were prompted to investigate after questions were raised because of the amount of money bet and won by Wild Desert’s owners, Dan Borislow, who boasted winning $100,000, and Keith Jones, who said he’d won $13,000 with the Plate win.
