hours of the back stretch. It’s a place of refuge for those ghting the demons of addiction, a place of learning for those who wish to better their mind and spirit. A place to talk to someone when you don’t think anyone will listen or care.
As I said, there are no guarantees: this world may suggest you nd peace in a bottle or
a prescription, but I would venture to say that the peace that Jesus offers will go a long way in helping you nd peace. It’s a peace that allows you to be yourself in spite of what’s going on around you - and that may give you a peace-

26used interjectionally to ask for silence or calm or as a greeting or farewell “at peace” : in a state of concord or tranquility.
Jesus also had a de nition of peace - in John 14:27 He states: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
We are entering the dog days of summer. Here at Woodbine, we’ve been at it since February
and out west they’ve not only started earlier, but some have also switched tracks, uprooting homes and families. Back stretch workers and horses are starting to feel the grind of
ful, easy
feeling.

the season, short tempers and “sour” horses abound. What was once tolerated as a cute habit in both human and equine is now seen as
a nasty vice. For instance, the horse who likes to stop and look at their leisure on the way to the track was enjoyable in the fresh tem- peratures of springtime now becomes a pain in the butt in the oppressive humid-
ity of an Ontario summer (especially if you’re free- lancing!). The person in the next shedrow who teased you just a few months ago, resembles a boor on the best day. It’s enough to make the average worker want to ing open the barn windows and make like Howard Beale
in Network: “I’m mad as hell and not going to take it anymore!”
I think Jesus had it
right when He assured
His followers that His would be a different kind of peace. After all, our per- sonal peace often depends on our circumstances and surroundings. Yet Jesus’ words are spoken to a group who would face untold amounts of persecution, torture and death, the self- same things He would face in a short while. So how
do we nd peace or does peace nd us? How can we remain tranquil in a world of disarray?
July 23, 2008 saw the ful llment of a plan that I wrote about in December 2007. Here at Woodbine, we saw the ribbon cutting of a facility that may not guarantee you peace, but might go a long way to helping you nd it. It’s the Jake Howard Center, named for a man who had con- siderable compassion for those who toil in the dark
