focus moves on to Glorious Goodwood and the Ebor Meet- ing at York. Goodwood must be one of the most scenic race tracks in the world as it looks out over the Sussex Downs in front and Chichester in the forefront of the English Channel in the distance behind.
Over the ve days, there will be a multitude of races varying from 5f to a 2m 5f handicap, where the top weight gives the bottom weight around 26lbs in a 16 horse eld. The highlight of the meeting is the Gr1 Sussex Stakes over a straight mile, a race won by recent multiple Gr1 winners, Rock of Gibraltar and Giant’s Causeway.

The King George at Ascot is usually where you see the Derby winner take on older horses for the rst time. This year however, New Approach will be missing, so it looks as though the Ballydoyle horse, Duke Of Marmalade will start favourite. He is three for three this year, all Group One’s, but has never been tried at a trip over 11f and there is plenty of speculation as to whether this son of Danehill will actu- ally stay. If he doesn’t, there are plenty who will, if they are good enough.

The jumps season is pretty quiet throughout the summer, but nonetheless there are one or two good prizes on offer. The Summer Hurdle and Chase at Market Rasen are usually well contested events for the decent money on offer and the Hurdle race this year went to the Charlie Mann trained Ka- ties Tuitor ridden by Noel Fehily. Fitted with cheek pieces for the rst time, he was patiently ridden to come from well off the pace for a comfortable win. Peter Bowen usually has one ready for this meeting and this was very much the case in the Summer Chase with his 10 year old Snoopy Loopy, who jumped well to take it up 3 out and hold on for a one and a half length win.

Over the water the big meeting of the summer is the Galway Festival and win lose or draw, it’s a racing certainty that plenty of Guinness will ow throughout the seven days.
The Cheltenham Festival lost its edge for some, with news of the death of notorious bookmaker Freddie Williams at the age of 65. Well known for his exchanges with big punters such as JP McManus, he was not afraid to accom- modate huge bets while others hesitated or shied away, hence the nick-name ‘Fearless Freddie’.
Down under, that tremendous race mare Makybe Diva, winner of three Melbourne Cups now heads to visit the soon to be rst time champion sire, Encosta De Lago. The plan was to visit the Coolmore stallion last season, but that plan had to be rerouted and she met up with Fusaichi Pegasus instead. She already has a foal by Galileo.

2004 Canadian International and multiple Gr1 winner Su- lamani, then owned and trained by Godolphin, had his rst winner as a stallion with Dazinski in a 7f maiden at Yar- mouth in England recently. After standing at Dalham Hall Stud, he has now moved to Haras du Logis in France.
Although he promised much at Ballydoyle, he never re- ally delivered at the top level. Mike De Kock seems to have Archipenko in good form now and after winning big bucks in the Gr1 Audemars Piguet QE II Cup at Sha Tin, he then became the rst South African trained horse to win in Eng- land. The Kingmambo colt may now head for the Arlington Million.

With steroids a topic for discussion, the British Horserac- ing Association have announced that from January 1, 2009, overseas trainers will have to declare that their horses have not been trained on ‘non-therapeutic substances’ other-
wise they will not be allowed to run. Although steroids
are banned in the UK, they are allowed under veterinary supervision for horses not in training. Most racing nations in the world take a similar approach, although the US would be one of the most notable exceptions.
