JORGE PIZARRO - CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9
Looking back on his long riding career, Pizarro says "I've ridden lots of good horses, but I had no real favorites, although Legal Liz was pretty quick and honest. We're all here because we love horses, they're good animals. But as a jockey you fight weight so many years, and eventually your body tells you do something else."
Pizarro and his fiance, Brigitte Desourcy (an assistant trainer to Nielsen in charge of his Fort Erie stable), are the parents of three children. Stephen, 12, is mainly interested in computers and Kayla, 14, competes in soccer. "They don't want anything to do with horses...not yet," Pizarro said. "But our son Tyler, 18, is galloping horses for trainer Sue Leslie at Woodbine and is going to try to be a jockey."
In his last years of being a jockey, he had to struggle to keep his weight at 118 or 119 pounds. Nowadays, Pizarro never goes near a weight scale: "I don't know what I weigh, and I don't want to know. I just know I'm healthy and happy.
The former champion rider also revealed that he has no video tapes of past winning rides to watch and relive some of his racing thrills: "They didn't have tapes when I started riding. Later on, the owners and trainers would keep them. If I did have some, maybe I'd miss race riding even more."
Did You Know..... That a study in England by
Twink Allen and Sandra Wisher of the Equine Fertility Unit in Newmarket which was funded by the Levy Board, has found that almost 40% of 2-year-olds in training fail to start and of those that do start, 2/3 fail to win. The odds improved for 3-year-olds with 75% making a start and 40% winning at least one race. The study involved 1,022 foals conceived in the Newmarket area in 1998, and tracking them through the end of their 3-year-old season in 2002. By the end of the study in 2002, one-third of the horses remained in flat-race training in Britain or Ireland at age-four.
