Area Horsepeople Form New Club
By Harlan Abbey
"I've sold a number of foals to people, but a lot of them asked 'Where do I go next?'" explained Jacquie Karr, president of the newly-formed horseman's organization Thoroughbred Niagara.
Karr and her husband own Hillside Thoroughbreds in Wellandport, near Dunnville. They stand two stallions, the Irish-bred Legal Jousting, co-owned with Krista Kocot, and New Regime.
She continued: "For new Thoroughbred
owners with a yearling, you just can't go into a phone directory and find listings for 'Racehorse Trainers' or "Racehorse Training Farms.' We wanted to meet with everyone involved in the Thoroughbred racing industry so we could ease the way for more new Thoroughbred owners to race at Fort Erie."
Thoroughbred Niagara initially involved just four or five horsepeople. After its first "pub meeting," at Furlongs in Fort Erie, there were 27 paid members
($30 per year Canadian funds, $35 in U.S. funds). A website, designed by Kocot, www.thoroughbredniagara.com, had 115,000 hits through mid-January.
"Thoroughbred Niagara is for anyone now involved with racing, or anyone interested in becoming involved," Jacquie explained, "We meet the second Tuesday each month at All Stars in Font Hill and our 'pub nights' are at Furlongs in Fort Erie.
"Our website already has some forums pertaining to the 2006 racing season. We also hope to help find careers for Thoroughbreds whose racing careers end. One of our immedi- ate goals is to have a 'Made in Niagara' day at the Fort Erie racetrack, in which each race
would offer (in addition to purse money) a free breeding to a local stallion. The award would go to the winning horse's owner, and he could use it for any mare he owns, or he could give it to a friend.
"So far, Nordic Gaming (owners of Fort Erie Racetrack) and the HBPA have been very supportive and we expect a big jump in membership when area horsemen return from their winter racing and training locations to Niagara in March and April.
"One of Thoroughbred Niagara's descriptive phrases is 'We breed, we feed, we own, we buy, we sell, we claim, we train, we race, we jump, we show, we hack, we grow hay and straw, we muck out, we make them look pretty -- and we have fun doing it!"

News In Review
Churchill Downs has announced that it will be paying purse money to all entrants participating in stakes races in an effort to boost participation and show gratitude for the horsemen supporting those races. The new stakes payouts will begin with the spring meet April 29-July 16 and excludes the $2 million Kentucky Derby. 1% of the overall purse (including added money) will be taken out first, then all remaining purse money will be distributed to the top five finishers using the same formula in the past. Those horses finishing fifth or lower will receive an equal share of the 1%. Breeders’ Cup supple- ments are not included in the overall purse.
