The Game Earns the Most Sovereign Nominations
As reluctant (not very) as we might be to brag, The Game is obliged to report that it has received more nominations for this year’s Sovereign Awards than any other media organization.
The Jockey Club of Canada announced the finalists in the 2006 Sovereign Award Media categories on November 16 and The Game news- paper has been named four times.
Steve Plaunt, a new freelance writer to The Game, captured the nuances and challenges he faced when striving to become an exercise rider at Hastings Racecourse. His story, Hotwalker’s Blues, was published in the September issue of The Game and is one of three nominated in the category of
Outstanding Newspaper Article.
Peter Gross, the newly appointed Editor
of The Game, recalls his experiences at Woodbine in a tribute to the racetrack’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. His joyful recollection, aptly titled, 40 Years of Woodbine Memories, is nominated for Outstanding Feature Story, a category in which Peter was awarded the Sovereign Award in 2005.
Two photographs that appeared first in The Game have also been nominated for Sovereign Awards. Michael Burns Sr. and son Michael Burns Jr. both graced our October issue with beautiful shots and father and son have each been rewarded with nominations for best photograph.
We are also proud of the nomination received by Chris Lomon for Best Feature Article. Chris is a regular contributor to The Game. His nominated story, Embraceable Emma appeared in the Queen’s Plate Edition of the Canadian Thoroughbred Magazine. If Chris wins, we will still feel (unofficially), that one of ours did well.
The winners will be announced at the 32nd Annual Sovereign Awards ceremonies at the InterContinental Toronto Centre, 225 Front Street West, Toronto on Saturday, December 16, 2006.
The Jockey Club of Canada organizes and hosts the annual Sovereign Awards to honour outstanding achievements in all areas of Thoroughbred sport - from media coverage to Horse of the Year.
