Golfing for Injured Jockey at Fort Erie
Jockey Gilbert Searchwell is seen here on the backstretch at Fort Erie with one of his 13 grandchildren, 12-year-old Ramone Francis, who is visiting from the Bahamas.
Jockey Jack Lauzon and Fort Erie’s Dan Edwards organized a golf tournament to benefit the injured jockey who suffered a broken knee cap after a mishap during morning training on May 2. The horse Gilbert was galloping propped and sent him to the dirt. The 57-year-old Jamaica native has been riding since 1964 and underwent surgery on May 7 and says he still hopes to be able to ride again.
“Riding is my life. I just have a broken leg.” said the personable rider, “I’m in good shape. If I wasn’t riding I wouldn’t look like this.”
Gilbert is now moving around on crutches and says his wife, Donna Gordon, has been a great support, “She is still my heart-throb.” said Gilbert.
