Adena Hosts Natural Horsemanship Demonstration
Stacie Clark Rogers, Manager of Adena Springs North’s Retirement Program hosted a Natural Horsemanship demonstration for staff and friends on May 17 at their facility in Aurora.
Fawn Anderson, one of the two highest rated instructors in Canada, showcased her skills which she acquired using the Parelli Natural Horsemanship program.
The premise behind the Parelli system is to teach horsemanship naturally through communication, understanding and psychology, eventually gaining your horse’s trust, respect and rapport.
Fawn showed the crowd the fundamentals of the program using her own horse, Billy, as well as two horses from the Adena barn, Fritz, a 23 year-old Quarter Horse, and Stacie’s favourite thoroughbred retiree, Mark One.
Fawn explained that with the Parelli method you are not teaching the horses “tricks” you are teaching yourself and the horse how to “communicate” with each other.

2000 - Makors Mark (Sire: Son Of Briartic, Dam: Windsong Maria)
After winning the B.C. Derby in 2000, Makors Mark, trained by Hastings trainer David Forster, spent the majority of his racing career in Seattle at Emerald Downs. Makors Mark graced the winner’s circle on four more occasions during the next three seasons. He retired in May 2003. He is now standing stud at Leckbee Thoroughbred Farms in Onalaska, Washington.
According to Syndicate manager, J.R. Leckbee, Makors Mark is stands for $1,500. “Well after his last race he came directly to our farm. He’s an awesome horse to be around and he’s very intelligent,” he said. Leckbee points out that one of Makors Mark’s 2 year-old off spring, a horse named
Military Mark, recently came second at Golden Gate in California.
Makors Mark career earnings are $430,753 from 29 starts with 11 wins and 3 thirds.
2001 - Fancy As (Sire: Dignitas, Dam: Fancy Lucky)
After his B.C. Derby win in Sept. 2001, Fancy As was victorious one month
later in the B.C. Premier’s Grade 3. He went to the winner’s circle three more times until his retirement in April 2005. His owner, Red Smith who resides in Alberta, trained him.
According to Smith, Fancy As just might grace the winner’s circle one more time.
“Well After the B.C. Derby win, in 2001, we won a couple of Grade 3’s in California and then we sent him to Toronto but we ran into a few problems so we sent him home. He had a very bad colic and three operations. Then when we brought him back in 2005. He won at Stampede and then we retired him. He was running wild and squealing and bucking at the farm. (Red Ron Farms) He looks
like a million bucks right now. So I put him back into training. If he does run he’ll run at Northlands.” said Smith.
Fancy As has a lifetime record of $670,092 from 26 starts 16 wins 2 seconds and 3 thirds.
2002 - Cruising Kat (Sire: Katahaula County, Dam: Future Equity)
Winner of the 2002 B.C. Derby, Cruising Kat continued to race at Hastings until he was claimed from Hastings trainer, Darryl Snow. In November 2003 Calgary trainer, Robertino Diodoro, claimed Cruising Kat and continued to race him until
his retirement in October 2004.
His breeder, Terry Black of Rumour Creek Farms in Kelowna, B.C. purchased him back privately. “Well I had been watching him run his entire career, then purchased cruising Kat privately. He really made our farm. When Cruising Kat was claimed by Robertino Diodoro, I still followed his career. When I saw he was falling down to low claimers I tried to get in touch with the trainer
and inform him I was interested in the horse when his career was over. Then when I saw him listed to run in Arizona in a bottom claimer I really wanted him back.” said Black. After many phone calls Black was
successful in getting the horse back in November 1994. “Well when I did get him back we had to get surgery on his knee. He’s a wonderful horse and he’s my wannabe stallion,” says Black.
Cruising Kat retired with career earnings of $234,061 from 30 starts, 7 wins, 1 second and 3 thirds.
2003 - Roscoe Pito (Sire: Light Of Mine, Dam: Perfect Coin)

victorious in an allowance race at Hastings Race Course in May as well as the Breeders’ Cup Classic Stakes. His final trip to the winner’s circle was on July 3, 2006 at Emerald Downs in Seattle. Trainer and part owner, John Snow decided to retire Roscoe Pito after his winter campaign. “We ran him twice in California and we had a third and a fifth. He’s seven years old
now. He’s had a long career. He will try at Three Day Eventing. He will enjoy that.” said Snow.
Roscoe Pito finishes his career with lifetime earnings of $588,445 from 29 starts with 10 wins, 2 seconds and 4thirds.
2004 - Flamethrowintexan (Sire: Way West, Dam: Willalady)
Trained by Jim Penney and assisted by daughter, Kay Cooper, this Seattle based champion won the B.C. Derby in 2004. Flamethrowintexan has collected seven more victories since, including the prestigious Longacres Mile in 2006. Assistant trainer, Cooper likes what she sees in Flamethrowintexan’s
spring training. “He is training very well. In fact this morning (May 20) we worked him 3/4 of a mile out of the gate in 109.3,” she said.
According to Cooper, jockey Gallyn Mitchell will be in the irons for the next Stake race. “Gallyn’s been doing all the spring work on him at Homestretch Farms, so he’ll be on him for next weekend,” said Cooper.
Flamethrowintexan’s current career earnings are $805,812 from 26 starts with 15 wins, 4 seconds and 2 thirds.
2005 - Spaghetti Mouse (Sire: Archers Bay, Dam: Desert Mouse)

His one and only trainer, Gary Demorest, recently passed away from heart failure due to kidney problems. Demorest’s longtime assistant and best friend, Edward Sams will now take the training reigns.
According to Sams, Spaghetti Mouse is training great. “He hasn’t skipped a beat since last year. He’s been train- ing well all spring. We’re heading for the Longden (Johnny Longden 6000) next and then the Lieutenant Governor’s. This horse is trained for it. He’ll run good,” said a confident Sams.
