News In Review
Hastings, Jim Coleman Province Stakes winner, Ookashada, is being pointed to the $125,000 Alberta Derby on June 16 at Stampede Park in Alberta. According to trainer Toni Cloutier, he was in excellent shape after the race. The 3-year-old BC bred gelding by Millennium Allstar - Mascaretta, by Regal Remark finished second in his first start of 2007 in the CTHS Sales Stakes. Ookashada was BC’s Champion Juvenile in 2006.
The Bill Scott owned, Paul Nielsen trained, 8-year-old gelding, Le Cinquieme Essai, has returned to training at Woodbine after sustaining a season-ending suspensory ligament tear late last summer. Le Cinquieme Essai was injured while preparing for the Woodbine Mile, scheduled for September 17, after winning the G2 Play The King on the turf August 26. Previously in 2006 he had had two second place finishes; the G3 Connaught Cup in May, and the G2 King Edward Breeders’ Cup Stakes in July, both races were run on the turf.
Before his injury, Le Cinquieme Essai was attempting to better his third place finish behind Leroidesanimaux and Mobil in the 2005 running of the Mile, which was then called the Atto Mile.
Le Cinquieme Essai wintered with Paul Nielsen at Payson Park in Florida.
State Officials in New York are considering an overhaul of the Thoroughbred racetrack industry in the state. There is talk of possibly shutting down Aqueduct racetrack and having a new operator for Belmont racetrack while the New York Racing Association will have rights to operate Saratoga.
Aqueduct sits on 192 acres in Queens that is ripe for a variety of real estate plans. The sale could also help with NYRA’s many financial obligations. Plans could be made to winterize Belmont and add a casino and entertainment complexes.
Some of the past bidders in the racetracks in the state have been Empire Racing Associates, Excelsior Racing Associates, Capital Play and NYRA.
