BC Trainer Ships Six Horses to Woodbine
Long time BC trainer, Terry Jordan has shipped a string of horses to Ontario, the majority of which are owned by BC resident Bob Cheema.
“The purses are the reason.” said Terry with a pleasant smile, “If you can win ‘em.” then with a laugh he added, “the
plane goes back West too.”
Jordan, who has been training for more
than 40 years, has set up six stalls at Woodbine with an additional three horses being shipped to Hindmarsh Farm in Hillsburgh for training.
On the stall list at Woodbine is 2006 Sovereign Award for Older Male, True Metropolitan, winner of last year’s Woodbine Slots Cup. The now 5-year- old gelding finished third in the G3 Eclipse on May 21, 5 days after shipping in.
The day before, 3-year-old filly, Calendar Girl finished out of the money in the G3 Selene Stakes after coming off of a win in the Mount Royal Handicap Stakes on May 6 at Stampede Park in Calgary, Alberta. Terry was quoted in Daily Racing Form after her race, "She was making a move, but two horses came down on her and she had to check pretty
hard. She wasn't going to beat the
winner, but I think she would have hit the board. She might run in an allowance race at Woodbine before we bring her back to Hastings."
Alberta based Jockey
Quincy Welch was
aboard both True
Metropolitan and
Calendar Girl for their
races, “Quincy is a great
rider and has been aboard
True Metropolitan
7 times in 7 stakes and
he’s won.” explained
Terry about the jockey flying in for the races in Toronto.
On May 22, Terry returned to his full barn of horses at Hastings leaving Assistant Trainer Erin Cotterill in charge in Toronto.
It didn’t take long for Terry to record a
win. Three-yr-old gelding, Fortynine Express was a winner on May 23 in a $40,000 claimer with a purse of $48,300.
The other Bob Cheema horses who made the journey are Judgement Day, Dancing Allstar and Steady Smiler and the sixth horse, That’s an Outrage, races for Canstar Stable.

Equine Research Reaches Funding Milestone
Equine Guelph’s Research Program has reached an important milestone with funds surpassing $500,000 for 2007-2008 equine research.
The milestone was reached through the generous support of private donors as well as donations from the three major racing breeds in Ontario. Quarter Horse Racing Owners, the Standardbred Racing
Industry along with Woodbine Entertainment Group in memory of 2006 Kentucky Derby, Barbaro.
WEG sold wristbands to their employees and back-
stretch personnel as well as the general public on Derby Day, May 5 with all the proceeds donated to research in support of initiatives researching laminitis.
The funding ensures continued long term research into health discoveries that can lead not only to better care for horses that need medical intervention but also to cures for health conditions that afflict the horse.
