Jambalaya Wins Grade 1 Stakes at Gulfstream
The Canadian owned 5 year old Jambalaya roared from off the pace to capture the Gulfstream Park Breeders’ Cup Turf, a Grade 1 stakes race at a mile and three eights on the grass on Sunday February 24.
Ridden expertly by Javier Castellano,
the son of Langfuhr hugged the hedge
behind several horses down the
backstretch. Around the far turn, the
situation did not look promising as
Jambalaya, owned by Kingfield Farms and
Day Phillips, found himself blocked by a wall of horses. Castellano angled his horse outside rivals and in mid-stretch found just enough of an opening for Jambalaya to unleash his notorious late run. The favorite Honey Ryder was coming up quickly on the inside and the two horses appeared as if they
would hit the wire together, but Jambalaya had just a little bit more momentum and prevailed by a neck at odds of 7.10 to one. The winner’s cheque for $180,000 gets him over $825,000 Canadian for his 17 race career.
As a three-year-old, in August 2005 Jambalaya first proved his brilliance on the turf by winning the Breeders’ Stakes at Woodbine, the third jewel in the Canadian Triple Crown. A month after
that, he captured the Grade 3 Saranac at Saratoga Racecourse. This however, is Jambalaya’s first Grade 1 win.
Jambalaya is now being pointed towards the G3 $150,000 Pan American Handicap on March 31 at Gulfstream Park for his next start.

Canadian Champion and Horse of the Year Quiet Resolve has died
Sam-Son Farm announced that Quiet Resolve, Champion Turf Horse and Horse of the Year, has passed away.
Quiet Resolve suffered an irreparable injury while trying to stand following anaesthesia for colic surgery on February 1 at Guelph University in Ontario.
A homebred for Sam-Son Farm by Affirmed and out of Quiet Cleo (No Louder), Quiet Resolve retired due to injury in 2002, with earnings of $2,346,768.
Quiet Resolve earned Sovereign Awards in 2000 as Champion Turf Horse and was named Canada’s Horse of the Year. In the same year he narrowly missed winning the Breeders’ Cup Turf G!, finishing second by 1/2 length.
“Quiet Resolve was a courageous race horse both on and off the track.” said Sam Son Farm owner Tammy Samuel-Balaz. “He was a sentimental favourite of the farm and a horse who always gave you 110% effort in everything he did. He loved to race and to win and will be deeply missed. He was one of a kind!”
Quiet Resolve has been buried at Sam-Son Farm.
