Retiring but Not Completely
The Ontario Racing Commission’s Supervisor of Thoroughbred Racing, Ed Hall, is planning to retire from his 56 year career at the racetrack on November 30, 2006.
But who really retires completely these days?
“I’m packing it in,” smiles the personable Eddie, “Maybe not completely. I might come back to fill in some areas.”
Ed also mentions the Quarter Horse industry, “It is starting to go. I wouldn’t hesitate to give it a try.”
Eddie grew up in the Toronto area and had an uncle that race rode and another that was involved in racing.
The racetrack has been his life and Ed has pretty much done it all at the track.
As a teenager, Ed was the size of a jockey and began working in 1950 at Greenwood as a hotwalker and groom for trainer Willie Morrisey. His ambition to become a jockey was fulfilled however it was short lived, “We won’t go any further on that subject,” laughs Eddie, “I liked sweets too much.”
By 1959 he was working on the starting gate for the then Ontario Jockey Club and in 1965 he became the Patrol Judge and worked for the race office as a horse identifier.
In 1975 Ed started with the Ontario Racing Commission as a Steward, a position which he held until 1992 when he became Supervisor, the position he is retiring from at the end of this month.
“It has been an enjoyable experience,” said the youthful looking seventy year old, “I love the people I work with and the people I associate with
and I love the industry. However there comes a time when you have to give it up.”
“The racetrack has been my life and my wife and three daughters have stood by me through the years when I worked throughout the summers.
“I would like to do a little bit of travel- ling in the summer
time and I have
two grandchildren
now and I would like to spend time with them.”
Looking back over his years at the racetrack Eddie only had one thing left to say, “I wouldn’t change a thing.”
Ed Hall soon to retire
