New Funding for LongRun
Millionaire Krz Ruckus was retired from racing after his last start on September 20, 2006 and according to new owner, local blacksmith Bill Anthoulakis, the nine-year-old retiree has settled in nicely to his new home.
Within days of his retirement, Bill’s fourteen year old daughter Hayley was riding Krz Ruckus at their Severn Bridge farm in Muskoka. According to Bill, the former racehorse is already jumping fences with Hayley and will be paraded on Millionaire’s Row at this year’s Royal Agricultural Fair in Toronto.
“He has one of the puppies as his pet,” continued Bill, “He also has a chipmunk who he lets live in his stall.”
Trainer Mike DePaulo, who was part of the New Venture Syndicate who owned Krz Ruckus at the time of his retirement from racing, said initially he was shocked to hear that Hayley was already riding the horse.
“It shocked me because he always was a tough horse to handle,” said Mike, “I know she is babying him and I guess he likes it.”
After winning two races in 2006, the decision to retire Krz Ruckus came after it looked to Mike like the horse had had enough. “He retired sound. It looked like he didn’t want to do it anymore.” explained Mike, “That was enough...he had done enough.”
ORC Approves 2007 Race Dates
The Ontario Racing Commission have approved the race dates for Thoroughbred racing in the Province for 2007.
Woodbine Entertainment Group had applied for 167 thoroughbred race dates, one day less than in 2006, and 364 simulcast dates. The dates have been approved with a backstretch improvement plan for Woodbine to be submitted to the ORC by December 15, 2006.
Live Thoroughbred racing at Woodbine will begin on Saturday, March 31, 2007, with a three day schedule (Friday to Sunday) until Wednesday, May 2 when Wednesday evening racing will be added. Thursdays will be added to the schedule on June 7, 2007. The meet is scheduled to end on Sunday, December 9, 2007.
The application by Nordic Gaming, owner/operator of Fort Erie Race Track, was for a significantly reduced 84 racing days in 2007, down from 104 days in 2006. They also submitted application for 364 simulcast days along with a back- stretch improvement plan.
The dates were approved by the ORC despite receiving a survey of over 100 people indicating preferences for one of three (unspecified) alternatives for the racing program.
According to the ORC approval, “the HBPA of Ontario and the Racetrack have entered into an extensive process of exchange of information and discussion with respect to the difficulties facing racing at the track and the ongoing sustainability of the industry at this loca- tion.”
The ORC document then explains,
“that after careful review of the survey and the hand- written notes made by those who signed the forms, the application and background on previous applications by the track, the Board approves the application as filed.”
Live thoroughbred racing will begin at Fort Erie Race Track on Saturday, May 5, 2007 with racing on Saturdays, Mondays and Tuesdays in May and racing on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays in June.
Racing will be four days a week, Saturday to Tuesday in the months of July and August then returning to a Sunday to Tuesday, 3 day schedule for September and October.
The final weekend of the meet will be Saturday, October 27 to Tuesday, October 30, 2007.

LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society and the Ontario division of the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association are pleased to announce a groundbreaking plan to help the province’s retired racehorses.
The H.B.P.A. has pledged 0.25 per cent of its purse account to LongRun each year, effective immediately.
The plan was set in motion by an industry committee comprised of members of Woodbine Entertainment Group, the H.B.P.A., Ontario Racing Commission, Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society, Jockeys’ Benefit Association, Jockey Club of Canada and other interested parties.
On September 27, the plan, which is expected to provide LongRun with $200,000-$250,000 each year, was approved by the O.R.C.
“The board of directors at LongRun is relieved and proud that the industry’s horse people have come together to provide for our equine athletes,” said LongRun chairperson Vicki Pappas.
“LongRun was in a very precarious financial position this winter and this plan was urgently needed to keep up with the cost of fostering horses awaiting adoption.”
LongRun, incorporated as a registered charity six years ago, has placed close to 175 horses in adoptive homes since its inception. It currently keeps a maximum of 30 horses in the program at a variety of foster farms close to either Woodbine or Fort Erie Racetracks.
“This money will partially cover basic care for 30 horses for one year,” said Pappas, “but the need is so much greater. We would like to be able to increase the number of horses we help each year, but this can only be accomplished with the continued support of our generous donors and other industry partners and through LongRun fundraisers. We need everyone’s financial assistance in order to move forward.”
The long-term goal of LongRun is to have a small, permanent facility that could showcase the horses who have been rehabilitated and are ready for adoption.
“Having one place where people can be educated about the merits of this program and look at the horses will help us to move them out to homes faster,” said Pappas. “A retired, rehabilitated racehorse can do almost anything and be a wonderful friend for anyone.”
LongRun’s second annual gala fundraiser, held at Woodbine Sept. 29, raised just over $100,000 for the organization and its horses.
