Survivalist retires to Park Stud
Park Stud has announced that the Phipps Family bred and raced Survivalist, a royally-bred, Graded Stakes winning son of Leading sire Danzig, out of the full-sister to Seeking the Gold, has been retired and will enter stud at Park Stud in Ontario.
A brilliant miler, Survivalist won the one mile Gotham Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct. Survivalist was first or second in 10 of 15 career starts including a second
place finish in the $1,000,000 G1 Wood Memorial. Survivalist broke his maiden in spectacular fashion at Belmont as a Two-Year-Old, winning by 8 1/2 lengths. A Stakes winner at 3 and 4, Survivalist retires with career earnings of $478,920.
“There has not been a horse to retire to Canada with as much promise as Survivalist in many years,” said Mike Byrne, owner of Park Stud.
In a letter from Jack Werk of Werk Thoroughbred Consultants Inc. dated October 12, 2006, it stated, “Michael Byrne’s Park Stud in Ontario has, in my opinion, landed the most promising stallion prospect to stand in Canada
since the days of Northern Dancer and Vice Regent. He has a pedigree to die for - by sire of sires Danzig, and out of Miner’s Game, a full sister to Seeking the Gold. Usually, stallions with these kinds of pedigrees in regional markets come without much of a race record. Not so with Survivalist. He retired with five victories, two stakes wins, including the G3 Gotham Stakes, and placed 2nd in the G1 Wood Memorial, while amassing nearly $500,000 in earnings!
“Survivalist offers Canadian breeders the opportunity to breed their best mares to a serious Kentucky-type stallion in their own back yard at an affordable stud fee.

Joey Franco first G1 stallion to stand in BC
California Horse of the Year (2003) Joey Franco arrived in BC last month, the first Grade 1 winner to stand at stud in the province.
Joey Franco (by Avenue of Flags - Susan Powter by Native Prospector) won the seven furlong Triple Bend Breeder’s Cup Invitational (G1) defeating Taste of paradise and Bluesthestandard.
A winner of $635,091 he stood at Harris Farms in California until October of this year when he came under the care of bloodstock agent Roxanne Sargent.
"I was fortunate to have a connection who knew that his owners were looking for a new situation for him," says Sargent. "They thought he would fit our racing conditions here in British Columbia because of his speed. He is an intelligent horse and a good guy to work around."
He will stand at stud Keenebridge Farm in Langley.
What’s Happening Out of Town
It looked as if the Reade Baker trained, Harlequin Ranches owned, Vestry Lady was about to win the $300,000 G2 Raven Run Stakes at Keeneland on October 21, however Leah’s Secret nipped her at the wire to win by a nostril. Vestry Lady, winner of the 2006 Duchess Stakes at Woodbine, ran a terrific race, and will likely be considered a front runner in the 3-year-old filly category at this year’s Sovereign Awards.
Four-year-old filly Hide and Chic, trained by Malcolm Pierce for owner Live Oak Plantation, was beaten by a length in the $300,000 G3 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes at Keeneland on October 14. The winner, Malibu Mint rallied six wide to overtake Hide and Chic just before the wire.
Fort Erie based trainer, Ralph Quaranta has wasted no time in recording wins at his winter home at Hawthorne Park in Chicago. Ralph has three wins in six starts with Portofino Creek for $12,000 on October 12 for his wife Debbie; He’s a
Believer for $10,500 on October 22 and Beautiful Brat for $10,000 on October 29. Jockey Shane Laviolette was aboard for all three wins.
