There is a familiar voice that flows out of the track speakers every race night at Stampede Park. If you look up at the television screens or find yourself in the paddock, you will catch Barry Buker doing his simulcast handicapping show. A vital part of any race night, Barry manages to captivate spectators new and old to the sport.
With a lifelong dedication to the sport of horse racing, Barry is well respected and loved by all.
“I have always loved this sport, I really enjoyed coming to the races as
a kid,” explains.
grew
Namaka, a small rural community near the town of Strathmore, Alberta. He later finished school in the United States, graduating in journalism. “A job opened up in the Daily Racing Form, so I took it and still write for them today.” he explains.
In 1987 Barry started doing the in-house simulcast handicapping show at Stampede Park. With the daily program in hand Barry scripts out his show allowing viewers a better look at the days races. This includes program changes, scratches, heavy
favourites and long shots and of course much, much more.
A busy man, when Barry is not writing for Daily Racing Form, doing the morning line program or in the middle of the handicapping show, he can be found at the rail during the races taking in the exciting action he loves so much. “I enjoy all aspects of my job, there are a lot of great people in our horsemen community.” Barry says with a smile and a nod.
Be sure to catch Barry’s in-house handicapping show when racing resumes at Stampede Park in Calgary next spring.
