New Home for the McCormacks
The house on the farm was built in 1891 according to a stone impregnated in the original brickwork which also bears the name Mapleshade.
Which is the reason behind why Karen and Bernard McCormack have called their new thoroughbred breeding farm Cara Bloodstock at Mapleshade Stud.
The McCormacks purchased and moved to the old ostrich farm in the North
Durham, South Kawartha
Lakes region in March 2004.
about making his breeding decisions, “Our philosophy is to have better mares to be bred to better Ontario sires as well as Kentucky sires.
“The main idea, like every Canadian breeder is to breed to win the Queen’s Plate.”
The McCormack’s were very close to that dream this year when their homebred, 2005 Coronation Futurity winner, Thinking Out Loud was
at the farm by stallions Alphabet Soup, Regal Classic, Arch, Monashee Mountain, Whiskey Wisdom and Ascot Knight, who are currently at their farm with their mares after being foaled out at Windfields Farm.
“Setting up our own farm was only possible with the considerable support along the way from the Taylor and Mappin families at Windfields Farm.” said Bernard.
Once the old fencing had been replaced with suitable oak boards, their horses joined them at the farm in the fall of 2004.
Karen works from home as an agent for a horse insurance firm while Bernard remains at Windfields Farm in the posi- tion of Sales and Marketing Director.

Their broodmare band has
now grown to eleven and Bernard humbly admits that they have had some very nice foals in the last couple of years.
Cara Bloodstock will be selling eight yearlings this year, five of which are homebreds the other three, all fillies, were purchased along with Bernard’s brother, New York and Dublin bloodstock agent, John McCormack.
