Edenwold to Canadian Derby
According to an article in the Edmonton Sun, the James and Alice Sapara owned, 2006 Queen’s Plate winner, Edenwold, will be travelling to their
hometown, to compete
in the Canadian Derby at
Northlands Park. The
$300,000 Derby is
scheduled to be run
August 26.
good horses here and we just would like to be part of the field. I'm never that presumptuous (to predict a win). This is
Jim Sapara was
quoted as saying, "I've
never won the Canadian
Derby and it would be
nice to add it to the
trophy case." He also
added, "I wouldn't be
coming if this race wasn't
in my hometown. I have
a lot of racing friends in this community and they have been most anxious in suggesting I come and that is why I am coming."
The Sapara’s have lived in the Edmonton area for 22 years however they have raced their “top-flight” thorough- breds in Toronto for close to ten years.
Jim was also quoted, "There are a lot of
horse racing and you saw what (could) happen the other day." referring to the bumping down the stretch in the Prince of Wales Stakes on July 16 which resulted in a fourth place finish after being promoted from fifth with the disqualification of race winner, Malakoff.
The Prince of Wales result ended the Triple Crown dream for the Saparas which made the decision of not entering the
$500,000 Breeders’ Stakes an easy one allowing the colt some well deserved time off before the Derby.
Edenwold will become the third Queen’s Plate winner to start in the Canadian Derby in its 77-year history (Driving Home (1980) who won the Derby and Regal Intention (1988) who finished second to Elmtex).

Did You Know....
That Scrub Oak (Quercus dumoso) is a dense, almost impenetrable mix of tough, wiry, spiky evergreen shrubs with a coat of leathery leaves. In the Spring it is soft and green, by late Summer it is hard, brown and hostile. Alias ‘el chaparro’ gave its name to chaparreros or ‘chaps’ worn to protect the legs when riding through on horseback.
