Sovereign Awards Finalists announced
In January, the Jockey Club of Canada announced the Sovereign Award Finalists for 16 of the 17 horse and people categories for
2016.
Owner Ivan Dalos and his Tall Oaks Farm breeding operation have not won
a Sovereign in those categories despite having
a number of  nalists for
a relatively small stable and breeding operation. This year Mr. Dalos and his Tall Oaks-bred are representative of seven  nalists in eight categories:
Tall Oaks Farm is the breeder of Conquest Vivi (2YO Filly) Channel Maker (2 YO Male) Gamble’s Ghost (3YO Filly) Amis Gizmo (3YO Male) Conquest Enforcer (3YO Male, Male Turf & Male Sprinter) and is a  nalist for Outstanding Breeder of 2016.
Plantation and King and His Court (2YO Male), owned by Wachtel Stable and Gary Barber.
Ivan Dalos is also the owner of the aforementioned Gamble’s Ghost and Amis Gizmo who are trained by
November at Keeneland Sales).
Mark was the Trainer for the now dispersed
Conquest Stables, LLC and Gary Barber who are both in the running for Outstanding Owner for 2016.

The trophy recipient of the divisional horse awards shall be the owner of the horse at the time of the awards presentation and, if the owner is not also the breeder; the breeder listed on the Jockey Club Certi cate of Registration may receive a trophy as well. However don’t count out Trainer Roger Att eld, a seven time Sovereign Award winner for Outstanding Trainer. While Mark Casse has dominated this category for the past  ve consecutive years, it is Roger that has broken up Mark’s almost decade
long sweep, Roger earned the Sovereign Award for Outstanding Trainer in 2009 and 2010 (Casse 2006- 2008 and 2011-2015). This year Roger is once again a  nalist for Outstanding Trainer and is the Trainer of four of this year’s  nalists
Ghostly Presence (2YO Filly) & Tiz a Slam (2YO Male) both for owner/breeder Chiefswood Stables (Limited); Are You Kidding Me (Older Male) 2015’s winner in this category owned by Ronald K Kirk, John C. Bates, & Michael Riordan; and Internal Bourbon (Female Turf Horse) for owner/breeder Charles Fipke.

Trainer Mike De Paulo
Trainer Mike De Paulo could have a busy night on April 13 with four of the  nalists connected to his stable and he himself a  nalist for Outstanding Trainer.

Conquest Enforcer (3YO Male, Male Turf Horse & Male Sprinter) owned by Conquest Stables before the Stable’s dispersal
in November. He was purchased for $785,000 by Loooch Racing out of the 2016 Keeneland November sale and won a G2 Mathis Brothers Mile Stakes at Santa Anita for the new connections on December 26, 2016 (now owned by Loooch Racing Stables, Imaginary Stables and Raquel Ritchie and Trained by Phillip D’Amato.
2014 Horse of the Year, Lexie Lou (Female Turf Horse) owned by Gary Barber (before being sold for $1 million as a broodmare prospect in
Eurico Rosa da Silva 2015 Outstanding Jockey
Noholdingback Bear (Male Sprinter) owned by Bear Stables Ltd. and Passion for Action (Male Sprinter) owned by Benjamin Hutzel.
Mark Casse, the Sovereign Awards’ winning-est Trainer is connected to nine*  nalist not including himself who is once again up for Outstanding Trainer honours.
