High Standards for Breeding
at Adena Springs North
The breeding shed at Adena Springs North is layered with 18 inches of wood chips and
a matting system that is replaced every year. After each breeding season the room is completely cleared and is lime disinfected.
The stallion stalls are lit with seasonal lamps 18 hours a day to provide a springtime effect during the breeding season.
Adena Springs is the only breeding program to win the Eclipse Award and Sovereign Award as Outstanding Breeder in the same year (2005-2008 & 2010). This comes as no surprise when looking at the steps they have taken to ensure the comfort and safety of every mating performed.
Photo Above: The name of the stallion the mare is breeding to is clipped to her halter while in the breeding shed. Frank Stronach currently has 90 mares at the farm in Aurora.
Each stallion has his own breeding bridle and snaf e bit and special care is taken to ensure the mating is as natural as possible. Three men are in the room for safety and video is recorded from start
to nish to ensure compliance of a live cover. Adena Springs North has a 92% conception rate as it is standard practice for a sample from the stallion to be checked for potency before the mating of the mare. Padded boots are provided for the mare in behind and the stallion is then brought in after a complete wash down to ensure that there is no shavings or dirt.
The barn is tted with a ventilation system which extracts and replaces the air every 4 minutes providing a fresh environment for the stallions and the people working in the barn. The barn’s water supply is piped from well water located on the property and is ltered and treated by light to kill bacteria.
