MARE MIX-UP: IS IT SASSY LINDA OR FOXY BELLE?
By Jackie Humber
In July of this year, Hastings racehorse owner Gord Webb was informed that the mare he owned and raced as Sassy Linda was involved in a mix-up when she was a yearling.
Although the ownership papers stated that Gord Webb of Fly Stables owned a six year old mare named Sassy Linda, by Trapeze Dancer out of the mare Sassy Lindi, the Jockey Club has now concluded that the mare is actually a six year old mare named Foxy Belle Sired by Silver Fox out of the mare Sweeter N Laddie.
The mix-up became apparent to the Jockey Club when first time thoroughbred breeders Cathy and Steen Reggelsen of Strideaway Acres, tried to register their 2004 colt sired by Feu d'enfer out of Foxy Belle for this year's Thoroughbred sale in B.C. "We couldn't believe what was happening," said
Cathy Reggelsen. "We've been in the Paint breeding industry for 16 years but this was the first time we bred thoroughbred to thoroughbred. I thought, Oh no, we must have made a mistake."
The Reggelsen’s were not too upset about their mare’s heritage because they were given the mare free of charge from Hastings trainer Frank Barroby and his wife Lynne.
Frank Barroby was flabbergasted at first by the mix-up. "I can't believe it. We bought Foxy Belle out of the 1999 sale and even though she was a little small we still bought her. I ended up liking her 'cause she could run a bit," said Barroby.
Jockey Club Registrar Rick Bailey began an investigation as soon as an irregularity occurred in the registering of the 2004 colt.
"The 2004 colt showed an exclusion from the parentage. One of the parents did not qualify and that's when we (Jockey Club) became involved," said Bailey. According to Bailey when a mix-up occurs a second blood
sample is taken and a search for a common location begins.
"Sometimes the common location can be the same sale or the same farm or the same breeding shed," said Bailey.
The Reggelsens had to submit another blood sample and when that came back as an exclusion a hair sample from the mare was submitted which was when the Jockey Club confirmed that the mare was actually Sassy Linda and not Foxy Belle.
The common location for both of the mares was that they were both bred at Juniper Creek Farms in B.C. and they both went through the 1999 Thoroughbred sale in B.C. Bob Hall from Juniper Creek Farms remembers both of these mares at the farm but does not know how the mix-up could have occurred at Juniper Creek Farms. "When I sent the blood work in on both I thought I did it correctly and I can't believe that it could have occurred," said Hall. He does however admit that mistakes can happen. "I know mistakes do happen but I'm still not sure," said Hall.
Gord Webb of Fly Stables who now owns Foxy Belle instead of Sassy Linda is not too concerned about the mix-up. "Well I still call my horse Linda. She's a real nice mare but she can be a handful to train. She's getting to a point now where I'm getting to retire her anyway," said Webb.
Jockey Club Registrar Bailey also points out that each year an average of 37,300 foals are registered and a small percentage of mistakes can occur.
"When a problem does occur we get help from the breeders as soon as possible so we can resolve the problem. Sometimes people do make mistakes with the paper work," said Bailey. "We now have the latest greatest technology to verify the parentage."
The Reggelsen's 2004 colt that was the centre of the mix-up investigation is now correctly registered as hip #184 at this years' Thoroughbred Sale at Thunderbird
Show Park in Langley B.C on Sept 13, 2005.
Jockey Agent, Andy Bankuti (right) hands an ice cream to Ken Hargrave on the backstretch at Woodbine.
Andy purchased the ice cream cart stocked with ice cream at a silent auction at the Zoo-Doo fundraiser for the Toronto Zoo earlier in the month. Not knowing what to do with all of the ice cream, he decided to sell it on the Woodbine backstretch on the weekend of August 20 & 21 with all the proceeds going to LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society.
“People on the backstretch were so good.” said a heartfelt Andy, who raised $926.80 for LongRun, “Everyone from hotwalkers to the ORC Stewards were generous and no one balked about the prices and most people gave a little more than the actual cost.”
Vicki Pappas, Chairperson of LongRun, was extremely grateful for Andy’s efforts and the generosity of the backstretch. “What a wonderful thing he did.” said Vicki.
