2007 Alberta Yearling Sale Remains Steady
The average price at this year’s Alberta Thoroughbred Summer Yearling Sale was just over $11,000, within $100 of the average from 2006. The results brought welcome relief to Alberta breeders and to the CTHS Alberta Division who hosts the sale.
On the Horse Racing Alberta website, CTHS Alberta Manager, Rennie Gellner was quoted, “There’s no doubt that the mare purchase program is having a positive impact on sale prices. Of the horses consigned to the sale by David Lovlie’s Winsome Acres, the highest priced yearling went for $40,000 to Bear Stables, owned by Bonneville business- man, Danny Dion. That yearling is from the mare Classikas which Mr Lovlie bought through our program. This is the best sale Paddockhurst Stables has had in
several years and three of their top selling yearlings were from mares bought the same way.”
Hip No. 110 - a chestnut colt by Trust N Luck - Classika, by Regal Classic. The mare is a half sister to stakes winner LeFantome, and stakes placed, Latin Reign and Arcadius.
Implemented in 2004, the mare purchase program, provides a subsidy to support mares in foal, purchased outside the province for a minimum of $10,000. The mare must foal in Alberta and be bred back to an Alberta stallion in order to meet the program’s requirements.
The program is an effort to encourage Alberta breeders to upgrade their mares, and if 2007 is any indication, with 32 applications being filed, the program is being well received.
