The Jones’ Say Thanks
Sara Jones, wife of Woodbine based jockey, Jono Jones, was injured in a training accident while exercising horses at Woodbine in early August.
Sara, the main caregiver for the couple’s 3 young children, was hospitalized for two weeks and released after surgery to repair injuries to her right shoulder.
Sara contacted The Game with a request to thank everyone who showed great concern and support after the accident. “The support and well wishes from everyone was overwhelming,” commented Sara, “We would truly like to thank everyone for their caring and their help.”
Sara will be leaving with the children to her native Barbados for the winter months where her family will assist with the children while she fully recovers.

Ch-ch-ch-changes
Get Tied On
with Chaplain Shawn
Mid-September brought some rude awakening mornings to the Woodbine backstretch. Single digit temperatures gave horse people a cold slap in the face as they headed to their respective barns. Some were prepared, but most weren’t, as many had dressed for work much as they had for the past summer months. Now, hands deep inside pockets, shoulders hunched forward, they trudged toward their inevitable fate, many wishing they’d dressed warmer. Many hot walkers and grooms were already in the barns and had the opportunity to warm up and reflect on the change of climate in certain and often profane terms. But jockeys and exercise riders, who don’t officially start until the main track opens at six, found refuge in offices and tack rooms as they, (myself included), tried not to think about the bracing conditions. Somewhere, probably out west, it snowed.
It’s funny to watch people respond to change, especially weather. Some were already contemplating a trip to warmer climes, many forgetting a long cold spring. These are the transitional seasons, spring and fall. Warm days in March entice us by promising better days ahead, while the cool ones of fall are hardly a promise- more of a threat. No matter what track I’ve been to, once Labour Day has passed, more often than not, conversation turns to “What do you do, or where do you go, during the winter?” The fact is, the days have been getting shorter and the nights longer since June 21, the longest day of the year. Oddly, the first day of fall found temps in the mid 20s and I could be found walking our dogs clad only in sandals and shorts in absolutely lovely weather.
Horse racing schools us rather quickly and never let’s us become complacent. Just when we settle in to conditions of work and life, racing finds a way to remind that we’re never totally in control. People and horses: get hurt or sick, retire, leave the track, die, etc. We shouldn’t be surprised, we should expect the unexpected, yet we’re often shocked when we learn of events that rattle our cages. I’m often reminded of the third chapter of the Book of Ecclesiastes that was the source for the hit “Turn, Turn, Turn” by the Byrds. (If you can relate, you’ve really dated yourself!) The author reflects on life and sees that there is a time for everything- living and dying, laughing and crying, on and on. At some point we will all experience these situations. So to it is in racing. Sound horses become unsound, fast horses slow down. Our parent’s age, our kids grow up and we forget about the cycles in life. For me, one of my biggest changes will have occurred by the time you read this. On September 27, I will walk my oldest daughter Meaghan down the aisle and then perform her wedding ceremony. Then in October, I turn 50 (ouch!) More on changes in my next column.
NOTE: We have started a new video series on Wednesdays for Soul Survivors. It’s called Convictions and features min- isters and missionaries in some of the most dangerous parts of the world, exer- cising their faith in conditions that would humble the hardiest of us. Join us October 3 at noon and as usual, lunch is on us.
