Brad Smythe Passes Away
After a two-year battle with cancer, Brad Smythe passed away at his family home in Alberta on Friday, February 4, 2005. He was 48.
Brad Smythe was born in
Hamilton, Ontario and
raised and schooled in
Calgary, Alberta. He accomplished singer and actor in his early years before a visit to the racetrack with a close friend in 1975 swayed his path towards the horses.
He began as a hotwalker for R.A. “Pinky” MacDonald and later worked for “Red” Smith and Elmbrook Stables.
He was a natural around the horses and began galloping in the spring of 1976 at the indoor track at Elmbrook before moving to the track where he continued to gallop as well as groom. By the end of the season he rode in four races, placing second in one.
His career as a jockey began in the spring of 1977 and it didn’t take long for the young apprentice to be successful. That summer he rode Western Reason to victory in the Canadian Derby Trial, the Canadian Derby and the Calgary Sophomore Handicap and was also victorious aboard Roman Crew in the Birdwatcher Stakes.
Brad finished third in the Alberta jockey standings with 103 wins,
108 seconds, 88 thirds from 618 mounts before travelling to Ontario to finish out the year. At Greenwood he added 4 more victories to his record including a win in the Valedictory S. aboard Gore Park and a close second aboard Remedial in the
Display Stakes.
He was leading apprentice in Canada
that year and was awarded the Sovereign Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey.
Brad went on to become a successful trainer.
In an announcement published in the Toronto Star it was written that ‘Bradley wanted to extend his love and appreciation to his family and especially his Mum for all their support and caring in these last days.’
At Brad’s request there was no funeral service and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Brad’s memory directly to HBPA Backstretch Fund, 401 - 255 - 17th Avenue SW, Calgary, Alberta, T2S 2T8.
Brad will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Whitney, his son Matthew, his mother Reta, two brothers Sterling and Steve as well as two sisters Tanya and Nancy and is survived by his father Harry.

If you don’t like the weather in Alberta.....wait five minutes and it will change. A snow squall during training hours at Stampede Park in Alberta was short lived and gave way to a bright sunny day 1/2 hour later.
