Stallion fits in Ontario
Among the array of new stallions who have hit the breeding scene in Ontario in 2005, Where’s the Ring, is a new comer who provides breeders with an excellent opportunity to tap into a proven family.
According to Gardiner Farms President, Dr. Michael Colterjohn, Where’s the Ring, “fits the criteria” of what he looks for when deciding which stallions to stand at the farm.
Dr. Colterjohn explained that ‘bad luck’ was the only reason why Where’s the Ring was not a graded stakes winner, which has ultimately been a good thing for Ontario breeders. “If he had won a Graded Stake he would not be here.” said Michael, quite matter of fact.
It was close though.
Where’s the Ring was second by a nostril after gunning and passing Shake You Down a second too late in the Grade 3 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap at Oaklawn Park in 2004.
“We were able to get him here because he didn’t win that race,” said Michael after watching the video of the race, “But how close can you get!”
The “criteria” which Dr. Colterjohn looks for when selecting the stallions that stand at
Gardiner are horses with sires pedigrees
that should have been Grade 1 stakes
winners but something happened in their lives that prevented them from achieving their true potential.
Where’s the Ring is the perfect example.
As a yearling, Where’s the Ring, ripped a quarter off of his heal causing an imperfection in the hoof and coronet band which continually interrupted his entire racing career.
He broke his maiden at Delaware Park in his first start in June as a two year old however he aggravated the injury during the race forcing him to be laid off for the year. This unfortunately would become a regular occurrence after many of his races. He only raced twice at age three aggravating the problem in both starts but came back the following year at age 4 to win 4 and place second in allowance company along with an impressive win in the Chuck Tallifero Memorial Stakes and using a brilliant move winning at Keeneland going 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.3.
“Even though he had an injury he could play with the big boys.” said Michael about the race record of Where’s the Ring pointing out that he defeated horses who went on to be Graded Stakes winners.
Where’s the Ring is the son of Seeking the Gold, by proven Grade 1 producer Mr. Prospector. As we all know, Seeking The Gold has produced multiple Champions including Horse of the Year, Dubai Millennium and is a proven sire of sires with Mutakddim, Petionville and Cape Town.
The dam, Wedding Picture, by Blushing Groom, is also just as impressive. She has produced talented runners and proven sires including Where’s the Ring’s half brother, Multiple stakes placed winner, Winged Victory (by Nijinsky II) who has already produced a Grade 1 winner in
Chile in his first crop as a stallion. Another half brother is Multiple Stakes winner, Service Stripe (by Deputy Minister) who is the sire of 28% stakes horses from his first three crops of just 46 foals. His average earnings per starter is $96,869 and is the sire of Grade 1 winner Cashier’s Dream from his
first crop.
His half sister is also the dam of
Broken Vow and his own dam is a half sister to the dam of Peaks and Valleys.
“Where’s the Ring’s maternal family has proven that they can produce sires,” said Michael, “Every son is capable and every daughter is capable.
“His bad luck with his foot injury
explains his race record because he couldn’t keep on a regular campaign.
“We are fortunate to have him here.”
Where’s the Ring is owned in partnership with
Pin Oak Stud and Gardiner Farms and is standing at Gardiner Farms in 2005 for $3,500 guaranteed live foal.
