Fort Erie is Alive & Kicking
Officials at Fort Erie Racetrack released their 2005 Stakes schedule in February and from the looks of what they have planned it should be an exciting year for Fort Erie runners.
New to the schedule this season is a series of eight “Cup Races” which offer the prestige of winning a Stakes race without the black type. Each race will offer a purse of $30,000 and will include conditions favorable to Fort Erie runners.
“It’s about the horses at Fort Erie,” said Fort Erie’s Director of Racing, Herb McGirr Sr., “The Cup Races allow the connections to be in the infield winners circle and receive a trophy with a decent payday.”
The Cup Races are scheduled for August and September and there are races for the boys and the girls, going long and short and on the dirt and the turf.
The first Stakes race of the season is the Labatt Bison City Stakes, the second leg of the Canadian fillies Triple Tiara Series. The purse of $250,000 is the same as previous years and will run on Monday, July 4 along with the $100,000 Daryl Wells Sr. Memorial Stakes for Colts and geldings 3-year-old & up.
The $40,000 H.A Hindmarsh Stakes for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up is scheduled for Monday, July 11 and the boys version will be run the next day with the $40,000 H.J. Addison Stakes.
Fort Erie’s most prestigious race, the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes, the second leg of Canada’s Triple Crown, is scheduled for Sunday, July 17 with the $100,000 Ernie Samuel Memorial Stakes for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up, scheduled the same day.
The $125,000 Rainbow Connection Stakes for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up will be
the last black type event of the season
on July 24. The Cup Race schedule
will then go into effect with one or two Cup Races a week until Labour Day.
“The schedule is good for the people at Fort Erie,” comments Herb, “there are opportunities for all horses to run at.”
The Fort Erie backstretch will open for training on Sunday, March 20 with the newly constructed main track open for training the following day, weather permitting.
According to Herb, Fort Erie has received more than 1500 stall applications this season and with accommodations for a little more than 1200 horses, some will unfortunately have to be turned away.
The 2005 live thoroughbred season at Fort Erie begins on Sunday, May 1 and Monday, May 2. A Saturday through Monday schedule will then be in effect until May 24 when Tuesdays are added. There will also be live racing on Canada Day, Friday, July 1 and Fridays will be added to the schedule for the month
of August. Monday, October 31 is the final day of racing for the 2005 season.
