INFLUENZA IN HORSES - CONTINUED FROM PAGE 37
Take Care of the Feet
You know yourself that having sore feet is not pleasurable. The last thing you want to do when you have a blister or a cut on your toe is to put on a pair of running shoes and go for a run.
The same can be said for a horse.
Body aches and muscle problems definitely effect the performance of a runner however having sore feet can mean not running at all.
According to Wayne Kraushar of Centurion, when a horse competes or trains, minor abscesses in the hoof are formed. These abscesses usually can’t be detected unless they get bigger and at that point you have a real problem.
Any size abscess or bruising of the hoof can effect performance. With that in mind, Wayne and his team of experts designed the Centurion Hoof Pad.
Like the other products Wayne offers, the Centurion Hoof Pad uses a low frequency pulsating magnetic field to break down minor abscesses in the hoof on an ongoing basis therefore reducing the risk of serious foot problems developing.
During the half hour treatment the Hoof Pad sends a low frequency magnetic field which causes alpha waves to go to the horse’s brain which then releases endorphins to the entire body of the horse.
The Hoof Pad has a calming effect and usually after 10 minutes the horse is relaxed and dozing.
Wayne says the most common question that trainers ask is ‘how do you get a horse to stand on a pad?’
“Because of the good feeling they get from the Hoof
Pad, after three days, the horse usually walks onto the pad itself.” said Wayne, mentioning that the company has sold more than 1000 Hoof Pads since its inception two years ago. “It’s like us humans. We are willing to do anything that makes us feel good.”
The Centurion Hoof Pad has proved to be beneficial for abscesses, cracks, bruised feet and coffin bone problems and is currently being tested in two laminitis studies where the early results have shown to be extremely promising.
“Everything comes from the feet.” says Wayne, “A horse won’t race with sore feet.”

Recommendations
1. Horse owners should consult their veterinarian regarding the need for completing a vaccination program (initial and booster shots) for influenza.
2. While vaccination does not necessarily prevent influenza, the disease in vaccinated horses is less severe and the signs last a shorter period than when horses are unvaccinated.
3. Horses traveling to and from horse events such as shows, race tracks and facilities should maintain adequate protection against influenza and the other respiratory viruses.
4. It is important for attending veterinarians to investigate respiratory disease outbreaks to identify the causal agent. Influenza strain identity is needed to ensure that vaccines are kept current with strains of recent outbreaks.

What is arthritis?
Inflammation of a joint. An increase in the amount of synovial fluid in the joint is a result of this inflammation. Accumulation of synovial fluid in the fetlock joint is called a “wind puff” or “windgall”. Inyounghorses, aswellinginthe fetlock joint, particularly on the front of the joint where the cannon and long pastern bones meet,
is called a “green osselet.” This swelling is a result of inflammation and reactive changes of the front edges of these two bones and adjacent cartilage. If the green osselet does not heal, a “chronic osselet” might develop with a perma- nent build-up of synovial fluid in the joint and inflammation and thickening of the joint capsule over the damaged area with secondary bone changes following the initial inflammation.
