Apprentice Race heats up at Woodbine
Emma-Jayne has First Stakes Win & Corey loses Bug Allowance
Woodbine’s leading rider, Apprentice Emma-Jayne Wilson, reached the 100 win mark on September 3 aboard the Kevin Attard trainee, Alas Elak, in the final race of the day. Two weeks later on September 18, she captured her first Stakes win aboard the Darwin Banach trained and William Sorokolit Sr. owned, Classic Stamp, in the Gr. 2 Bell Canadian Handicap for a purse of $371,500.
Emma-Jayne remains on top with a record of 111-115-103 in 722 starts and $4,888,426 in earnings (15% wins).
Apprentice Corey Fraser, who is currently ranked
second in the jockey’s standings has officially reached journeyman status losing his “bug” weight allowance on September 30. As of September 26, Corey sat close behind Wilson with a record of 105-88-70 and $4,616,370 in earnings in 543 starts (19% wins). Corey brought his career stakes total to four with a win aboard the Robert Tiller and Frank DiGiulio owned, Top Ten List, in the $125,000 Le Prevoyante Stakes on September 17.
Jockeys Patrick Husbands (483-80-73-79 - $4,661,013); James McAleney (440-78-78-60 - $4,934,645) and Todd Kabel (382-70-60-45 - $4,689,995) round out the top five.

Dance With Ravens DQ in Plate Trial Reversed
September 22, 2005 - The Ontario Racing Commission, after hearing testimony from all involved, reversed the decision by the Woodbine Stewards and reinstated Dance With Ravens as the winner of the June 5 Plate Trial Stakes at Woodbine.
Dance With Ravens finished first by a neck in the race, however he was disqualified and placed out-of the money in sixth after the stewards ruled that the Mark Frostad trained horse, ridden by jockey Todd Kabel, had interfered with sixth place finisher, Atanas, approximately a sixteenth of a mile into the race. The jockey aboard Atanas, Rui Pimentel, did not lodge a claim of foul, it was a stewards inquiry that initiated the claim.
Mark Frostad appealed the disqualification which resulted in the reversal of foul with the ORC stating that “Mr. Kabel did not swerve or ride his horse either way at the sixteenth pole when Mr. Pimentel’s horse suffered the stumble or bad step.”
Apprentice Justin Stein, one away from 100
Apprentice Jockey, Justin Stein, is one win away from reaching 100 wins at the 2005 Hastings meet as he sits a top the leader board with 99 wins, 100 seconds and 62 thirds in 447 starts with earnings of more than $1,650,000 (22% wins). Justin now has a more comfortable lead over seasoned Jockey Pedro Alvarado who is second in the standings with a record of 78-57-50 and $1,339,607 in 378 starts. If things continue going his way, Justin looks like he could take leading rider honors at Hastings this season.
Justin’s rise to the top can be attributed to days like September 17 when he won 5 races on the day’s card which included winning the feature race, the Delta Colleen Handicap aboard Pretty Meadow. The previous week, he had a four win day on Sept. 10.
Jockeys David Wilson (421-63-57-62 - $$1,376,557); Frank Fuentes (341-61-43-49 - $1,156,991) and Chad Hoverson (263-51-59-41 - $964,040) round out the top five at the meet.

TrainerTerry Clyde could make history at Hastings
Notis Otis Returns
British Columbia’s local 2-year-old champion in 2004, Notis Otis, returned to his winning ways in August after coming very close to dying earlier this year.
Notis Otis won an allowance race on August 14 bringing his record to five wins in seven career starts.
Coming off of three stakes wins in 2004, the colt was scheduled to make his 3-year-old debut in the City of Vancouver Stakes in April, however when the race came up short with only 2 entries, he was shipped to Alberta to run in the Presidents Handicap on May 7. It was reported that he was hit hard coming out of the started gate, which trainer Tracy McCarthy said “might have weakened his immune system” and he contracted a very serious virus upon his return to Vancouver.
The Ole Nielsen’s Canmor Farms bred looked like he wouldn’t survive, let alone make it back to the races this season.
After the win, his connections felt he could have a shot at the BC Derby and he ran in the Richmond Derby Trial Handicap on September 5 where he finished third behind Appearance Fee, who was scratched from the BC Derby, and Spaghetti Mouse, the BC Derby eventual winner. Unfortunately due to a rule change Notis Otis was not eligible for the Derby as he hadn’t earned enough money in 2005. Instead Notis Otis was entered and won the $53,603 Hastings Sophomore Stakes on Derby Day Sept. 24.
It looks like it will be a fight to the finish for the trainers title this year at Hastings. Although there is still plenty of racing left this season, trainer Terry Clyde could make history by being the first female trainer to earn leading trainer honours at Hastings.
At one point in September, Terry was tied for first with trainer Gary Demorest and at press time, she was nestled in second, only two behind with 29 wins to Gary’s 31.
Terry currently has 24 horses in training at Hastings including Lukin Awesome and Backseat Becka.
