Three-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Best Mate, died during a race on November 1 at Exeter in England. The 10-year-old Irish bred gelding was a fan favourite and to the hor- ror of the disbelieving crowd, Best Mate collapsed after being eased during the home stretch in the Haldon Gold Cup by jockey Paul Carberry. He had suffered a heart attack and officials confirmed his death on the public address system. It was his first race since suffering a burst blood vessel in March forcing him to miss the Gold Cup in Cheltenham, a race he had won the past three consecutive years. Best Mate was trained by former school teacher Henrietta Knight.
The youngest jockey to win the Grand National, Bruce Hobbs, has passed away at the age of 84. Bruce was only 17 years old when he won the Grand National in 1938 aboard the horse, Battleship, who was trained by his father Reg Hobbs, who also trained 1942 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Medoc. Bruce was born in Long Island, New York, when his father was training for American owner Ambrose Clark. The family returned to England in 1922 and Bruce eventually went on to follow in his father’s footsteps becoming a trainer after gaining considerable weight upon his return from the war.
