a splint is coming on.”
Kim says that often she gets asked to massage
horses after the trainers have tried everything else and nothing helped, “The object is to try to get to them before they get sore.” says Kim stressing that prevention and maintenance is much more effective. “Horses are naturally good athletes and they should be treated as such. Massage is a process, not a quick x. You will notice something immediately and it will get better over time.”

horses will provide a real experience with horses that are in need of massage.”

“The best thing about massage is that the results are visible.” says Kim with an obvious passion, “Massage helps the muscles and pinpoints problems. When using massage as a maintenance tool you can feel through your hands when changes are happen- ing in the muscles due to leg trouble long before it becomes visible to the eye.
“Knee problems show up in the shoulder muscles, long before they show up in the knees because the
The experience also made Kim realize that this is what she wanted to do with the life. After quitting her publishing job, Kim enrolled in the Equissage course offered in Virginia and began her massage practice in the show horse barns upon her return.
At age 38, an ad in the newspaper looking for hot- walkers, grooms and exercise persons, brought Kim to the racetrack where she started as an exercise rider working for trainer Sue Leslie.
“I wanted to learn more about what was expected of racehorses because then I’d be able to treat them better.” says Kim who was initially wanting to expand her massage business.
Call 416-410-8732 for more information.
One of her rst racehorse clients was Fly for Avie, trained by Ivan Dalos. Ivan gave Kim a sound piece of advice, “you can’t run two businesses properly” be- cause at the time Kim was admittedly hooked
on galloping horses and her massage business was slipping into part-time status.
Kim didn’t heed the train- er’s advice until two years ago when the fun had started to go out of galloping.
“My brain got bigger and my heart got smaller and I realized what Ivan said was true and decided to turn my focus on massaging.”
Now at age 48, Kim’s massage business is thriving and she is ready to pass along her knowledge to others through a series of training courses she is offering this summer at her newly formed, Soothing Hands Equine Massage School.
The four-day equine massage courses are being offered in June and August with a 10-day certi cation course in October. Special dates and times will be added for grooms at the racetrack if there is enough interest.
“I will be teaching the courses which include guest lectures from veterinarians, farriers, equine chiroprac- tors and equine dentists. The course will encompass all parts of the equine package.” says Kim.
The classes will be held
at Grandview Thorough- bred Farm in Palgrave and all of the horses that will
be used for the hands-on classes will be current or ex- racehorses, broodmares and yearlings. “We’ll be using ‘real horses’,” explains Kim, “not horses that have been massaged to death. These
