Did You Know.....
That David Seftel, a track physician at Golden Gate Fields in California, presented to the Jockeys’ Guild Assembly, documentation of the dangers of the continued use of lead saddle weights by jockeys. Along with David, Carl Hornung, a Professor at the University of Kentucky, showed that study results revealed lead levels in swabs taken near jockeys’ room scales and saddle storage areas at 42 racetracks to be
in excess of the upper allowable limit of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The lead count near the scale was 3521 micrograms, and 1,339 at the valet table. The upper allowable limit for lead by the EPA is 200 micrograms.
Low level lead exposure can cause kidney problems, high blood pressure and gout.
The lead weights and saddle mats which are used to reach the assigned weight in a race have been removed from Golden Gate Fields since the study results were revealed.
