disease responded better than chronic cases, with a 100% response rate in the rst group and 11 of the 17 chronic cases eventually being designated “treatment failures”. Of the recent- onset horses, 67% showed a positive response to treatment, and 75% returned to normal activity by six months.
In this initial study, clinical improvement was still noticeable six months after the course of treatment, but in France, where Tildren is now in general use, horses receiving this therapy are routinely treated two to three times a year, according to the pharmaceutical website, www.tildren. com.

0. Sixty and 120 days later, the horses were examined for improvements in dorsal exibility – and once again,
the results were dramatic. Horses treated with Tildren showed signi cant improvements in exibility and mobility, compared with the control horses, and those improvements were still evident after 120 days.
The radiographs, as it turned out, weren’t sensitive enough to detect changes in bone density, but follow-up research now suggests that Tildren can
Tildren may also prove useful for other conditions. The same research team, led by Dominique Thibaud DVM of the Centre d’Imagerie et
de Recherche sur les Affections Locomotrices Equines, at the Ecole Nationale Veterinaire d’Alfort in Goustranville, France, recently explored the drug’s potential for decreasing bone loss in horses immobilized by wearing a cast for
a broken limb. Two groups of eight horses each were placed on stall rest for a period of eight weeks, with berglass casts placed on their left forelimbs. One group received Tildren by slow IV infusion, in two treatments
The team analyzed biomarkers of bone resorption and bone formation, and evaluated bone mineral density before and after the study, and came to the conclusion that the horses who were treated with Tildren suffered signi cantly less bone resorption than the animals who didn’t get the drug.
The side-effects of Tildren are minor: the manufacturer notes 5 to 10% of treated horses experience fatigue, increased urination, and sometimes mild colic signs for a few days. Because studies have not yet been performed to determine the drug’s effects on young, growing horses, Tildren is not recommended for animals under the age of three.
by an eight-week standardized training protocol.
And that’s not all. Clearly excited by the possibilities presented by
this therapy, the French team went on to evaluate the usefulness of Tildren in the treatment of horses with osteoarthritic lesions in their spines. After assembling a group
Clearly, the applications of this drug are only beginning to be explored. It’s currently available in North America only under special circumstances,
but testing is ongoing and Tildren is expected to be fully approved here soon.

Lottery Winners
Did You Know....
That a New York State Labor Department investigation into alleged underpayment of stable workers has expanded to Aqueduct and Belmont Park following an investigation at Saratoga Race Course. The state said that more than 1,200 backstretch workers were underpaid—in some cases less than minimum wage—and that most trainers do not keep adequate records.
Chris Loseth and his wife, Tracy McCarthy are all smiles after Chris’ name was drawn as the Grand Prize winner in the 2008 Win’Fall Ocean View Lottery on October 29.
The grand prize was a choice of two homes or a cash pay-out of $1,500,000. They chose the cash payment.
One of the rst phone calls Chris received after the win was from retired Jockey Gary Stevens.
