Norse Ridge Farms Limited hosted a preview of their 2009 stallion roster during an open house on Saturday, November 22 in King City, Ontario.
Perspective with Chaplain Shawn
A steady stream of guests, wanting to get a close-up of the stallion prospects, kept the staff busy throughout the day.
It’s that time of year. Cold mornings, cold racing, cold, cold, cold. I attended a concert recently by a Manitoban,
(he has to be good!), named Steve Bell. Steve is a Christian and a
winner of numerous music awards,
has had his recent recording with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, just receive a Western Canadian Music Award, and is a winner of two Junos. Perhaps this sums up his music best: “Steve Bell is a Canadian musical treasure.”- Larry LeBlanc, Billboard Magazine. (Whew!).
during the day workers on the back stretch can quietly re ect: when they begin and when they end. In between, life here is so hectic; I’m surprised we can remember to breathe. As people arrive to work, there’s almost calm before the coming storm. Anyone visiting the track for the rst time is overwhelmed by the amount of activity that occurs at 6:01 a.m. There’s a small break after training hours, but it’s deceptive- if you’re running a horse that afternoon or evening, you’ve still got a long road ahead.
Norse Ridge Farms is now home to former Wind elds stallions, Best of the Bests(IRE) (Machiavellian - Sueboog, by Darshaan) and Weather Warning (Storm Cat - City Band, by Carson City).
Steve has released a new album called Devotion which re ects a unique form of worship called Taize. I’ll let Steve explain it best from
Here are the lyrics for “Everything We Need”:
Best of the Bests(IRE) is a
Group 1 winner and sire of
stakes performers in Italy, England, France, and Germany. His rst North American-bred foals are yearlings of 2009.
Timeless Kisses, by Timeless Moment) is a sire of impressive 2008 winners from very limited crops; Serena’s Rose, 8 1/4 length MSW winner ($72,612 in 2008) and Guipago ($47,577 in 2008).
his liner notes: “Taize music is very simple. Usually it consists of one or two lines of scripture sung slowly, reverently and repeatedly. The idea
is for the community to enter into communal contemplation – to get past the melody and words and enter into the mystery of the story of God and God’s people. No rules, no particular form – just worship guided by those goals and entered into through music. Learning as a community to hear and follow the Spirit’s gentle nudging is a beautiful and deepening experience. Examples on this album are “Embrace the Mystery”, “Who Condemns You Now”, “Everything We Need” and “Gone is the Light”.”
Everything We Need / Gord Johnson
Winner of the Manitoba Lotteries Derby, Weather Warning entered stud in 2008. A son of Storm Cat, he is bred on the same Storm Cat over Mr. Prospector cross as top sires Tale of the Cat, Johannesburg, and Pure Prize. His rst crop will arrive in 2009.
Megas Vukefalos (Cool Victor - Bold Debra, by Dom Alaric (FR))
is also a thoroughbred stallion who
is Quarter Horse registered. He is
a multiple sprint stakes winner of $836,696 who is the sire of four recent winners at Woodbine including Atanas ($147,792), Eleftheria (5 wins to 5, 2008 $104,957) Mega Rush and Clear Lake.
In the morning Lord we do look to you
The two former Wind elds stallions join an already impressive line-up of stallions standing at Norse Ridge for 2009:
It was in your strength that we made our way
Alumni Hall (A.P. Indy - Private Status, by Alydar) is a multiple graded stakes winner who earned more than $745,000 in his racing career. His rst foals are yearlings in 2009.
Iskandar Elakbar (Vice Regent
- Honest Gal, by Honest Pleasure)
Sire of stakes winners Time of
War ($165,659); La Habitant Time ($151,520) and Wiry Willie ($123,625) from a limited crop. Average earnings per starter $61,254.
Have mercy
(Chorus)
You are everything we need
Feed us Lord
The writer seeks God in the morning
Paynes Bay (Mr. Prospector - Embellished, by Seattle Slew) is Canada’s leading second crop sire of 2008. He is the sire of 14 rst crop winners including stakes performers Grazettes Landing and Commander Bay. Paynes Bay is also Quarter Horse registered which is an excellent opportunity for those wanting to take advantage of the terri c purses and breeding incentives for the Ontario Quarter Horse Racing Industry.
Black Moons Arising - Quarter Horse Stallion - has earned Heste Sports Inc. the Canadian High-Point Breeder-of-the-Year Award in 2006, 2007 & 2008.
Also new to Norse Ridge this year is DM Selexus, a full brother to World Champion Racing American Quarter Horse DM Shicago.
Former Wind elds Manager, Bernard McCormack’s Cara Bloodstock is managing the promotion and bookings of all the stallions at Norse Ridge. Bernard can be reached at 905-986-0122.
Now the rst time I heard “Everything We Need”, I was blown away. The rst thought to go through my mind was “This is a race track hymn!” Written by Steve’s friend, Gord Johnson, the music style is, like the liner notes say, simple and elegant. The reason I thought “race track hymn” is that this song sums up, in my mind, a typical race track day.
for the strength that’s needed for the day and thanks God for the strength that got us through. In fact, I think we could re ect on the entire year with this hymn. We start off in January needing strength from God for the coming year and in the end “look back and say”... Maybe that’s not such a bad way to live each day, month and year.
There seems to be only two times
May God bless you and keep you and yours during the Christmas season and into 2009.
(from the album Devotion, by Steve Bell)
For the strength we need just to make it through
Have mercy
In the evening Lord we look back and say
