Herb Gene Ollive: Jockey, agent, racing steward, trainer, Canmor Farms farm manager, and especially father Herb left us November 7th. He’ll be missed by friends both off and on the racetrack and by his children Brandon, Tiana and Kaitlyn. A memorial service was held at Hastings on November 10th where Herb was remembered by his many friends in the community.
A funeral service was held November 15th in his hometown of Stettler, Alberta.
The BC Thoroughbred Industry whooped it up with it’s annual pat- on-the-back night November 15th and handed out some well deserved kudos and mantle-piece hardware to deserving and hard working people of the Hastings backstretch.
Fedora. Fedora, who started her apprenticeship in Ontario appeared on the Hastings scene in early spring with a goal in mind—to be leading apprentice. Her popularity among BC horsemen for her ability and courage on a horse should ensure long-term success.
the Sky, who won the Delta Colleen and the G3 Ballerina, was named older mare in both BC bred and Open divisions. Also this year he sent the good colt Arkhill to Alberta where he won the G3 Alberta Derby and the KY Alta stakes.

a favourite award: the HBPA’s Backstretch Person of the Year, offered to an individual who has made a contribution to the betterment of
the backstretch environment. This year it was awarded to trainer David Milburn who’s advice and assistance as both a lawyer and friend is given freely to those who need it. A lifelong horseman, his understanding of the backstretch community compliment the strength of his character and his willingness to help those who deserve it.
Leading trainer was Troy Taylor who again made Glen Todd and Patrick Kinsella Hastings leading owners.
The spectacular colt El Sinoloense was named two year old champion
in both the BC and Open divisions and fan farourite Spaghetti Mouse champion older horse. The fastest and classiest over six and a half furlongs was B R Remark who’s track record earned trainer Brian Giesbrecht and owners a share in the night’s shiny spoils.
Always a highlight of the night the BC Racing Hall of Fame inductions saw the addition of long time HBPA executive director Bryant McAfee

to the builders category. With over 38 years service to horsemen and the industry McAfee is a founding father of the Winners Foundation, a backstretch community organization dedicated to counselling people with drug and alcohol problems.
A consummate horsewoman she is respected by the backstretch community.
There were two sad notes on the year as we lost two popular members of the backstretch family.
Also inducted were Nick and
Pauline Fellicella, popular owners who have been among the BC breeding industry’s biggest supporters over the last thirty years. The Fellicellas buy BC bred yearlings to develop with the goal of winning major races. They have enjoyed tremendous success with this policy over the years with horses like Rambling Native, Stop the Blues, American Justice, and current fan favourite Spaghetti Mouse. Popular on and off the track (they own East-end landmark Nick’s Spaghetti House) they are generous and dynamic supporters of BC racing.
“She puts the horses rst,” says jockey Mark Walker. “If they’re not right she won’t lead them over and her shedrow is always clean and neat. She does things right and I respect her.”
Silvano Eric Garcea: Long-time friend and popular east-end native Eric Garcea passed away October 8th after a long ght with brain cancer. Eric loved horses and had been training
at Woodbine for the past decade. He continued with his horses and the
life he loved for therapeutic reasons during his ght with this disease. He
But, all said and done, the night belonged to trainer Cindy Krasner. The Vancouver native, who has trained horses here since 1971, made her rst trip to the podium that night to receive the Diamond Award of Excellence
for outstanding achievements in horseracing during the past season. Krasner had a banner year winning seven stakes races including the BC Derby with Krazy Koffee and Sadie Diamond Futurity with P. S. Good
N Ready and a total of $820,828 in purses earned.
Other winners were Remarkable Miss – champion 3 year old lly (BC bred), Blue Sky Holiday – champion 3 year old lly (open division).
Krasner went to the podium several times as PS Good N Ready, owned by Telford Farms, won best BC Bred two year old lly for winning the BC Debutante and the Sadie Diamond Futurity. Other trips to the podium, with owner Butch Goertzen, saw her raise the trophies for Krazy Koffee’s victory as Three years old colt (BC bred and open divisions) and as the 2008 Horse of the Year. When pushed by Goertzen to make an acceptance speech the reticent Krasner credited her staff for a job well done.
