The 2005 Thoroughbred Improvement Program receives Industry Approval
2005 Can-Am All Breeds Equine Show, March 17-20
The ORC has delivered its approval for the CTHS's 2005 Thoroughbred Improvement Program (TIP). With decreased wagering in 2004 and Slot Revenue projections down for 2005 the program has decreased by $1.2 million to $10.1 million. Even with this decrease the program continues to provide lucrative incentives to breeders in Ontario. The CTHS is pleased to announce new programs for 2005 and with the support received from the HBPA, Fort Erie Racetrack and Woodbine Racetrack our core stakes program was maintained.
It is the mission of the CTHS to ensure the long-term viability of breeders in Ontario and to promote breeding and racing of Thoroughbred horses in this province. To follow is a summary of the changes made to TIP to provide funding as mandated by the CTHS:
• THE TRIPLE CROWN: Working together with Woodbine Racetrack and Fort Erie Racetrack the purses will continue to be as lucrative with potential earnings totaling $2 million. The bonus of $500,000 to the horse that sweeps the series has been discontinued. The purses of these Canadian-Bred races reflect their tremendous historical significance within the sporting world.
• THE CANADIAN FILLY TRIPLE TIARA: Working together with Woodbine Racetrack and Fort Erie Racetrack the purses will continue to be as lucrative with potential earnings totaling $1 million. The bonus of $350,000, to the horse that sweeps the series, has been discontinued.
Note: The CTHS has maintained a breeders award of up to $50,000 to the breeder(s) of the horse(s) that sweeps both the Triple Crown and the Canadian Filly Triple Tiara.
• THE ONTARIO-BRED: In keeping with standards in other jurisdictions we have made changes to our program to reflect more of a Provincial than National Program where by for some portions of our program you must be Ontario-Bred to participate in incentives. Our definition of an Ontario-Bred is that of a Registered Canadian-Bred foaled in Ontario. We have changed the conditions of 11 Stakes races, that were previously Canadian-Bred, to Ontario-Bred. Our Breeders Awards are now for Ontario-Bred and/or Ontario Sired thorough- breds and our Fort Erie Racetrack Allowance Bonuses are now for Ontario-Breds.
• The bonus at the Allowance level at Fort Erie Racetrack will now be $5,000 for Ontario-Breds. These bonuses are paid out from 1st through 3rd as follows $3,000, $1,500 & $500. With an estimated 120 Allowance races being run at Fort Erie (60% eligible) in 2005 this would represent a distribution for Ontario- Bred runners of $350,000.
• In conjunction with Fort Erie Racetrack, in pursuing innovative marketing ideas, the CTHS has instituted a new Sales Credit Program at Fort Erie Racetrack’s top end claiming levels. A $3,000 sales credit will be issued to owner of the Ontario-Bred winner of an $18,000 Claiming race as well as a $1,500 sales credit to the owner of the Ontario-Bred winner of a $12,000 Claiming race. These credits will be cumulative and must be used within one sales calendar year after earned.
• Our Trainers Bonuses for the six Yearling Sales Stakes eligible winners has been changed to a $10,000 Sales Credit. This change in addition to the Sales Credit Program at Fort Erie Racetrack is in efforts to assist our breeders with the sale of their product.
Through the efforts and cooperation of the Board of Directors of the CTHS and the endorsement received from the industry we believe that we have laid the ground-work for a significantly better environment to breed and own horses in this province.
