WILLOW RIDGE - CONTINUED FROM PAGE 16
With a small consignment of yearlings, Willow Ridge Farms, sold all of the horses in their consignment and were the fourth highest consignors in the Preferred Sale.
“The people who bought our yearlings changed our life path and they probably don’t even know it.” added Bill.
Today, Willow Ridge Farm, is in full operation, with expansion plans already underway. In November 2005, they purchased the farm next door to their home, a 100 acre property with plenty of potential. The pair recently completed a new 15-acre paddock with 4 board oak fencing for the broodmares, while the yearlings of 2006 are being hand walked and prepped at the leased facility.
They grow their own crops for the horses which includes a human grade Quaker Oat as well as an orchard grass, timothy and alfalfa mixture hay.
Wild garlic and mint also grows in the pastures which have a lime stone base, excellent for providing natural calcium and minerals for the horses.
“It is because we are small that we can provide the best care for the horses.” says Bonnie, “When the boarders went back to the race- track this Spring, we had many compliments with people asking if the horses had actually been in Florida for the winter.”
Bonnie looks after the administrative side of the business including the shipping of the horses in their custom built horse trailer while Bill looks after the hands-on side of the business; the chores, riding, breaking, and legging up for the racetrack.
The foaling duties are shared, each taking turns on foal watch with 24 hour surveillance cam- eras.
Willow Ridge Farm currently owns a Steady Growth mare, Early Delivery, whose 2005 year- ling by Bold Executive sold for $41,000 in the Preferred sale. Her 2006 yearling is a handsome Trajectory colt and she currently has a Domasca Dan filly by her side and is confirmed in foal to Trajectory.
Another of Willow Ridge’s 2006 yearlings in the Preferred Sale is out of the Fast Play mare, Love Disarmed, a colt by Payne’s Bay. The mare’s 2005 yearling by Kinshasa sold for $11,000.
Willow Ridge Farm also owns 3 other mares in partnership with George Farr’s, Farr Bloodstock:
A Dayjur mare, Win Du Jour, whose 2005 yearling by Bold
Executive was the highest selling Bold Executive filly in the Select Sale at $62,000. The mare’s 2006 yearling by Cat’s at Home was sold in Kentucky as a weanling to Walmac Farms. Win Du Jour currently has a Friends Lake colt by her side and is confirmed in foal to Gilded Time.
The other mares include Bold Below and Munch N Grass.
With plans for a new barn, 4 or 5 more paddocks, and possibly a training track at their new farm, there is still plenty of work to be done however Bill and Bonnie are well on their way to owning a successful thoroughbred horse business.
