is a pro table race horse that goes on to a success- ful breeding career. In the race to produce the next track star, the versatility of the Thoroughbred is often overlooked. Ex-racehorses and unraced Thorough- breds have proven very useful as riding horses or performance horses.
Greaves’ prophecy was realized in 2007 when Morning Mist began her show ring career.
Bill Greaves, a former trainer at Fort Erie Race- track, describes the Thoroughbred as “the most versatile animal of any species.” A former trainer of both at racers and show horses, Greaves was once the trainer of Caraquet, a mare that is quickly making a name for herself through the early promise of her progeny both on the racetrack and in the show ring. Caraquet is the dam of two foals: Royal Winter Fair champion Morning Mist (registered name Daniella), and young racehorse Coleezpeenutt.
Purchased as a “re-sale project” by owners Henry Wilson and Karen Milton, Morning Mist excelled in her rst year of competition. The daughter of Nias was open champion at her rst show, where she won the qualifying class for the Governor General’s Cup at the Royal Winter Fair and was second in the Lieutenant Governor’s Cup qualifying class.
already turning heads at Fort Erie. Owned by Kim and Randy Conn, who stand the stallion Shelter at their Jericho Stud, Coleezpeenutt is training for- wardly under the tutelage of Gord Cowie, and looks to make her rst start later this summer.
A daughter of the Seattle Slew stallion Fast Play, Caraquet spent the early part of her racing career at Northlands Park in Alberta. Caraquet experienced her greatest success after shifting to Ontario, record- ing two wins at Woodbine before being relocated to Fort Erie and claimed by Greaves. Caraquet made eight starts following the claim, recording another win and closing her racing career with earnings of almost $70,000.
After qualifying second in Eastern Ontario, Morn- ing Mist proceeded to the Royal, where she won the Governor General’s Cup as well as the colt, lly or gelding of 2004 class, the Senior Champion Filly, and the Grand Champion Mare. The nal three categories were reserved to Thoroughbreds, making Morning Mist the highest placed of her breed.
“They think she’s pretty special down there,” Kim Conn said. “She’s just spectacular to look at, and she’s very, very smart.”
According to Greaves, Caraquet’s talent on the track, strong pedigree and good looks combined for a triple threat that would set her apart as a broodmare
“Many people think she has amazing potential to go on to the jumper ring,” said Milton, who owns KDM Equestrian Services with her husband Gary. With three small local shows already under her girth this year, Morning Mist will continue at that level for the rest of this season. Milton hopes this will give her enough mileage and experience to be competitive at the larger ‘A’ circuit shows in 2009.
“They’re so multitalented it’s amazing,” Conn said. “I love Thoroughbreds. They’re not advertised as being versatile as much as they should be.”

This year, Wilson and Milton are taking it slow with Morning Mist, with an eye to the future.
A riding coach of hunter jumpers, Conn was not actively involved in racing until acquiring Shelter to stand at stud. She and husband Randy purchased Coleezpeenutt in support of their stallion, and have gained a great appreciation for the versatility of the Thoroughbred in return.
Coleezpeenutt, a two-year-old lly by Shelter, is
