Orientation Centers become Field Operations Centers
As Landstar has grown, orientation centers have evolved to offer more than orientation to independent owner- operators newly leased to Landstar.
As well, the pandemic has heightened the realization of
the value of decentralizing support staff, and the importance
of increasing
personal interaction
and maintaining
relationships with independent business capacity owners (BCOs). Therefore, Landstar is implementing a few changes in the area of BCO support.
First, Landstar is changing the name of Orientation Centers to Field Operations Centers to more accurately describe
the current and future function of the centers – locations where BCOs complete orientation, attend CABS business
programs, participate in business and safety related workshops, use driving simulators, take advantage of amenities such as the business lounge and free
Wi-Fi, and engage with on-site Landstar personnel.
Second, with the name change and repurposed focus
of these centers, Landstar will be structuring BCO support staff around the Field Operations
Centers. This regionally-based approach to how we provide services
and assistance to the Landstar BCO network will help us continue to provide industry-leading support to further empower BCOs. Specifics about the structure are being determined and details will be announced companywide in the coming months.
FMCSA Hours of Service Regulations
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) revised four provisions of the Hours of Service (HOS) regulations to provide greater flexibility for drivers without adversely affecting safety.
All carriers and drivers operating commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) must comply with the FMCSA HOS regulations that went into effect on Sept. 29, 2020.

FMCSA revised HOS provisions in regard to short-haul exception, adverse driving conditions exception, 30-minute break requirements, and sleeper berths.
To help motor carriers understand the HOS regulations, the FMCSA launched an Educational Tool for Hours of Service (ETHOS). Visit eld.fmcsa.dot.gov/HOSRuleTool
