It’s a business that values loyalty and trust, which explains why Bruening has chosen UFG surety for their bond needs since
1963. Bruening is a customer of UFG surety’s partner agency, Holmes Murphy. “We’re loyal to our partners and suppliers,” stated Keith. “For us, it’s never about getting the cheapest deal, it’s about staying with the best deal.”
Bruening is both a community- and conservation-minded company, with a history of donating to local schools and organizations, maintaining and restoring its numerous quarry sites, and investing in solar energy at its facilities.
For the past 20 years, the company has been a recipient of the Bravo Award given by the Associated General Contractors of Iowa for its philanthropy. “We believe it’s important to give to the communities that we work in,” commented Keith. “We think it comes back tenfold.”
Bruening has grown substantially over the past two decades and management will continue to look for opportunities to expand. Though Keith and Greg do not plan to retire anytime in the near future, they will eventually and Keith admits “the biggest challenge will be replacing us.”
Even so, every generation of the Bruening family has taken the company to new heights and both Keith and Greg are excited to see what the future holds.
Greg’s two sons, Tyler, who serves as safety director, and Jacob, who works in the rock testing lab, are already following in the family business, and Keith anticipates that his children will too, once they graduate from school.
“The Bruening family has built a rock-solid company,” added Michael Hays, UFG surety regional manager. “Many of us have driven on the roads and bridges they have built and have
even biked the beautiful Trout Run Trail in Decorah. They do impressive work.”
After 85 years in business, Bruening has much to be proud of and it shows: in their eet of 150 red and green trucks that are washed weekly; in the newly planted trees that are growing at their quarries; in the hundreds of dedicated employees who deliver quality products and services to their customers; and in the generations of family members who have devoted their lives to the family business.
