 MAKING AN IMPACT
“Sandra and Dan” are essential workers in the foodservice industry. As a result of COVID-19, both had their hours cut, and they did not have resources to maintain their housing. They had never been homeless before but ended up at Transition House with their three young children.
They continued to struggle. Exposed to COVID-19 on three occasions, Sandra was out of work—without pay—for two weeks each time. Dan juggled three jobs as his hours constantly changed due to shut-downs and the economy.
Fortunately,Transition House gave them safe shelter and the time needed to manage their unpredictable work schedules and reduced income. They continued to work and save money, while their children attended Transition House’s
free onsite distance learning program.
Sandra and Dan were
grateful for the help
and eventually moved
into one of Transition
House’s affordable housing
units. They hope to move back
to an apartment in the community when
schools reopen, the economy improves, and their incomes stabilize.
Since 1984, Transition House has provided safe shelter and an array of anti-poverty programs for homeless families from the Santa Barbara area. The Women’s Fund has given multiple grants totaling $180,000 to support Transition House programs.
