Drums were used, 'IS also IrUmpets, for signalling and summoning at sea, although drums seem to be less common in con\em- porary illustrations; see, for example, on the poop deck of the Dutch ship ill the plIinting Engagement between aDUlch and English war ship, 1605 by Hendrick ComeliszVroom, painted in 1614.

one of the few items that can be associated wi th cutting weapons. The thin nature of this type of iron weapon would not enable it to survive well in a marine environment
