92 CHAPTER 3 Design Theory and Standards
The conversation goes something like this:
  Open Architecture Closed Architecture
Manufacturer: The price for the part is $1000.
Customer: I can get it cheaper from China.
Manufacturer: But that is my cost. Customer: That is not my problem.
Manufacturer: The price for that part is $1000. Customer: Whatever. I must have that part!
Manufacturer: But you still owe for invoice x.
Customer: That invoice is in dispute due to quality issues and late
delivery.
Manufacturer: Well, then I won’t ship you the part until you pay invoice x.
Customer: The system you sold me is down and costing me $25,000 per day!
Manufacturer: That is not my problem.
There is a fair balance between these two extremes. But the ROV operator is wise to choose his manufacturer carefully. The ROV manufacturer is wise to strike a balance between open and pro- prietary architecture—and, of course, to be fair to its customers.
